Although they won six of the 11 events, the Burlington High School co-op boys swim team was unable to overcome the depth of the Delavan-Darien squad in an 86-76 loss Tuesday at the Burlington Wellness Center.
The difference in the meet was the 400-yard freestyle relay in which Burlington had no entry and the Comets had two entries. That gave Delavan-Darien 12 points and the victory.
“Our boys actually outswam them,” noted head coach Denita Jones. “They just had two more relays than us.”
Waterford’s David Jones won two events – the 50-yard freestyle (in 24.89 seconds) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.73), while Burlington’s Shaun Weber and Waterford’s Matthew Briggs each won one. Weber won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.99, while Briggs was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.44.
The other two wins came from the 200-yard medley relay, and 200-yard freestyle relay teams of Jones, Briggs, Weber and Andrew Brutlog.
On the strength of three first-place finishes, the Demon boys finished sixth out of nine teams in the Caleb Gottinger Memorial Invite held Saturday at Milwaukee Riverside University High School.
The boys tallied 306 points, with Cedarburg easily outdistancing all other teams with 899 points. The second-place team – Riverside – had 533 points.
Jones won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.19 seconds. He also won the 100-yard breaststroke in a personal best time of 1:12.52.
