Heading into the second round of the WIAA playoffs, perhaps the most anticipated game was a Division 2 matchup between Wilmot and Waterford.
But rather than create any drama, the Wolverines turned the game into a rout.
Waterford led 14-0 early and cruised to a 52-0 win over the Panthers at Wilmot Friday evening.
The Wolverines are now 10-1 overall, with the only loss coming in week three against the Panthers at home when quarterback Zach Fisher sprained his knee. This time, the Wolverines got a huge running effort out of Greg Steffens and cruised to the victory.
“Our defense played great all night,” said Waterford coach Adam Bakken. “With our defensive effort, with the way our backs ran … it was just overall a great team effort.
“I certainly didn’t think this was going to be a 52-0 game.”
Wilmot coach Mike Greinke offered a short perspective on his team’s 9-2 season.
“It stinks that it has to end like this,” said Wilmot coach Mike Greinke, whose team trailed 24-0 at the half. “I thought it would be a lot more competitive a game.
“We just couldn’t get anything going offensively.”
