It was an impressive day Wednesday for area high school girls tennis teams, as Burlington, Waterford Union and Union Grove Union High School all qualified at least one player for next week’s WIAA Division 1 state tournament in Madison.

At the Badger sectional, Waterford’s Alyssa Helwig and Bridget Brockmann finished second at No. 1 doubles, while Burlington’s Olivia Leuck and Alli Zeman finished fourth. The top four finishers at both No. 1 singles and doubles qualify automatically for state, while the winners at No. 2 singles and doubles also automatically qualify.

The Southern Lakes Conference swept the No. 1 doubles qualifying sports, with Badger’s Joanie Williams and Andrea Chironis winning the bracket, and Delavan-Darien’sSam Hoyord and Kylie Bliss finishing third.

Waterford had a strong day, as its emergency No. 2 doubles team of Emily Rogahn and Taylor Webb won that bracket as well, while Emily Brekke won the No. 3 singles bracket. The duo of Rogahn and Webb had been at No. 3 doubles most of the season, but an injury to a player right before subsectionals pushed the team up a bracket.

Rogahn and Webb will also be headed to state.

At the Racine Horlick sectional, Union Grove’s Jessica DeGroot won her opening match at No. 1 singles and went on to finish fourth to earn a bid at state. She was the only UG player to qualify for state, but the Broncos had representatives in every bracket except No. 4 singles and finished fifth as a team.
