A week ago, Burlington High School boys volleyball coach Tim Gesteland was saying this might be his best team ever.
If early-season results are any indication, he had a point.
The Demons won the Kettle Moraine Invite Saturday for the first time ever, defeating Kettle Moraine 25-18, 25-21 in the final.
“Always a good tourney with many of the top teams involved,” said Gesteland.
BHS opened the day by going 4-2 in pool play. The Demons split with Greenfield, 25-11, 23-25, then swept Muskego 25-21, 25-20.
BHS then split with Arrowhead, 15-25, 25-19.
That put Burlington against Nicolet in the quarterfinals, and the Demons won 25-12, 25-23. BHS then beat Muskego in the semifinals, 25-15, 25-23.
The Demons got balance across its offense, which became even more important than normal when junior middle John Martin left with an ankle injury.
In his absence, Skyler Krause stepped up with seven kills and five blocks.
Nolan Rueter led the Demons with 41 kills, while Carson Biedrzycki added 26, Nick Bartlett 24, Ben Geiger 10 and Zach Gesteland eight. Gesteland also had 78 assists, six blocks and six digs.
Senior libero Garrett Schilling led the team with 52 digs, while Bartlett (15), Rueter (14), Geiger (12) and Bennett Conrardy (10) were also in double figures.
Biedrzycki had a team-best 11 blocks.
