This weekend will be a big one for Tom Hawkins and the Southern Lakes Blue Devils.
Hawkins, who originally founded the Blue Devils in 2006 and who is now co-owner of the Ironman Football League, will be inducted into the Semi-Professional Football Hall of Fame.
When Hawkins goes down Friday night for the induction in Canton, Ohio, he will be sponsored by Jordan Kopac.
Kopac will then face off as head coach of the Wauwatosa Spartans Saturday against the Blue Devils.
Aside from old rivalries, though, the weekend is what Hawkins has termed “make or break” for the Blue Devils.
“We’ve been struggling at the quarterback position,” said Hawkins, who lost veteran Warren Arnold after last year. “We’ve been moving the ball, but we’ve had poor decisions at bad times.”
Last week, in a 21-0 loss to the Muskego Hitmen, the Blue Devils put up more than 500 yards of offense, but turned the ball over twice in the red zone.
Fourteen of the 21 points scored by the Hitmen were the result of turnovers.
Things will change a little this week. The Blue Devils are bringing in Gary Griffin – who used to play for the Racine Raiders – at quarterback, hopefully to help guide the team, and also the team’s other quarterback, Chris Calhoun.
“He’s going to give us a lot more of a leadership role,” Hawkins said.
The Blue Devils will host the Spartans at Westosha Central High School in Salem at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The game will be “Military Appreciation Day,” with all military personnel with an ID admitted for free.
