A 49-38 win over Westosha Central Dec. 7 allowed the Union Grove High School boys basketball team to get above .500 overall this season at 4-3.
The home-court victory also gives the Bronco boys an early 2-0 mark in the South-ern Lakes Conference going into a big SLC game Thursday at Burlington.
In the Westosha Central win, Union Grove jumped out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter.
“We never relinquished the lead,” head coach David Pettit said, although he noted the Falcons cut it to four at one point.
The Broncos led 22-14 at the half.
Near the end of the third quarter, Westosha had cut the lead to five, when Andrew Kazikowski hit a big three at the buzzer to up the Bronco lead back to eight at 36-28.
In the fourth quarter, Un-ion Grove led by as many as 14, putting the game away by making five of seven foul shots. Overall, the Broncos shot 81 percent from the free-throw line – nine of 11.
The Bronco boys hit seven threes in this game.
“Their defense, they pack it in pretty good, so that leaves some openings from outside,” Pettit said.
Fortunately for Union Grove, the Broncos knocked a good number of the threes down.
Union Grove had three players in double figures. Kazikowski and Alex Hale each had 13 points, with Cody Walters adding 10.
The Bronco boys were at Burlington Thursday for a big SLC game.
Next week, they will play at Waterford on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m., and then will host Elkhorn on Friday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. Both of those games are SLC matchups.
