The Union Grove High School girls golf team hosted Wilmot Tuesday in a Southern Lakes Conference matchup at Ives Grove Golf Links and pulled out a close three-stroke win, 198-201.
“As a team, it wasn’t our best day, as each player had a few holes that they got in trouble, but we played good enough to win,” head coach Eric Swanson said.
Freshman Mari Suokko was the medalist, carding a 43, with senior Paige Murdoch two strokes back with a 45. Those were the two lowest scores among either team.
Sophomores Jorey Staven and Tara Manteufel both shot 55s, with sophomore Emily Garbie firing a 56.
The top four scores count toward the team score.
“We need to become a little more consistent, but they are all showing signs of progress, which is promising,” Swanson added.
Overall, the team is now 1-1-1 in SLC action.
On Aug. 23, the Bronco golfers took on SLC foe Westosha Central on the White Birch Course at Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville and came up seven shots short, losing 194-201 to the Falcons.
“We did not play our best today,” noted Swanson. “Although our team score was not that bad for a tough course like Brighton Dale, we really should have done a lot better.
Central’s Madison Fenski was the medalist with a 44, but Murdoch was second with a 47, and Suokko was just a stroke back with a 48.
Staven fired a 53, as did Garbie. Manteufel also competed and carded a 56.
The Broncos tied Waterford on Aug. 21 at Ives Grove Golf Links, with each team shooting a 193.
Suokko earned medalist honors with a 42, in spite of bogeying the final four holes. Ives Grove Golf Links is a par-36 course.
Murdoch fired a 48 and Manteufel a 49.
“Tara also came up big, breaking 50 for the first time in a match,” Swanson said.
Garbie carded a 54 and Staven a 58.
