After wading through a pair of difficult early-season tournaments with a pair of high finishes, the Catholic Central High School volleyball team proved it could handle Midwest Classic Conference play last week, too.
The Lady ’Toppers started the MCC season with a 26-24, 25-22, 25-20 win over St. Thomas More in Milwaukee Sept. 6, improving to 12-4 overall and 1-0 in the MCC.
“The team was excited to start the conference season, which I think caused a few extra nerves for us in game one,” said coach MaeMae Oberhofer. “After game one, we did a nice job settling into the match and executing.”
Catholic Central was again led by seniors Maggie Smith and Kelly Gould, and junior Megan Wadsworth. Smith had a team-high 17 kills, and added one solo block and eight block assists – plus 16 digs.
Wadsworth, meanwhile, pitched in 10 kills, two solo blocks, seven block assists and 18 digs.
Gould, meanwhile, came out after a pair of injuries in the two tournaments and posted 30 assists, two aces and six kills.
Wadsworth also had two ace serves, while Monica Litman pitched in four kills, one ace and a 100 percent serving night.
“Monica Litman provided a really nice offensive lift,” said Oberhofer.
Libero Ali Wiemer finished with a team-high 19 digs.
