As far as dominant performances go, the Burlington High School girls volleyball team delivered one Saturday at the Westosha Central Smash Tournament.
The Demons went undefeated in pool play and in the gold bracket, winning the tournament title.
“It was a solid performance all day,” said co-head coach Teri Leach. “We’ve worked hard the last few weeks of practice and it definitely showed in our play (Saturday).”
The Demons had not faced any deep competition since the West Bend Sprawl two weekends ago, but came out sharp at Westosha. After a close first set against Kenosha Tremper, BHS won 25-21, 25-11 and then Indian Trails 25-5, 25-5, both matches in pool play.
That put the Demons in the gold bracket along with Waukesha Catholic Memorial – which defeated Sprawl champion Divine Savior Holy Angels in pool play – and Westosha Central. Burlington pulled away from CMH after a tight first set, and won 25-19, 25-12, then bounced Westosha 25-19, 25-15.
Ironically, all three teams in the gold bracket had time constraints, as all three schools were celebrating homecoming weekend.
“The team played very focused and worked to make sure they controlled the style of play,” Leach said. “We want to make sure we continue to play with this mindset as we close out the regular season and head into the postseason.”
Senior outside hitter Ciara Capezio had a big day for the Demons, finishing with 54 kills and a .483 hitting percentage. She also had 17 digs. Freshman outside Quinn Spieker added 26 kills (hitting .412), while senior Kaysie Shebeneck had 85 assists, 12 digs, six aces and five kills.
Senior libero Morganne Longoria pitched in 27 digs, while freshmen Phoebe Hozeska and Ali Rueter added seven kills each. Rueter also pitched in 10 assists and four digs. Robyn Robers had 15 digs as well.
On Tuesday night, the Demons also picked up a Senior Night win over Wilmot, 25-7, 25-12, 25-4.
Capezio led the team with 18 kills, while Spieker added nine and Leah Hofer five. Shebeneck had four kills and 25 assists, while Longoria and Teagan Taylor both had four digs.
