The Burlington High School girls volleyball team was not going to be denied Saturday at the Southern Lakes Conference tournament.

After going undefeated in the regular season, the Demons swept all three opponents they faced en route to the title.

The Demons downed Westosha Central 26-24, 25-19, 25-16 in the championship match.

“Winning the conference tournament was a nice way to close out regular season play,” said co-head coach Teri Leach. “Westosha came out and played us tough, and it was great to see us respond to the competition.”

Burlington opened up the day by beating Delavan-Darien 25-9, 25-10, then downed Elkhorn in the semifinals, 25-14, 25-16, 25-14. The quarterfinals were best two out of three, while the semifinals and finals were best three out of five.

In the finals, Central came out of the blocks fast, and actually had game point before BHS scored two straight points for the victory.

The Falcons were close again in game two, but Burlington jumped out to an early lead in game three and closed out the match.

BHS senior Ciara Capezio had perhaps the match of her high school career against Westosha, finishing with 30 kills and a .519 hitting percentage for that match.

In total, Capezio finished with 56 kills on the day. Quinn Spieker added 24 – 14 in the match against Central – while Phoebe Hozeska pitched in 11.

Setter Kaysie Shebeneck had 84 assists on the day, as well as 13 digs and eight kills, while Sarra Webb had a team-best eight aces. Robyn Robers finished with a team-high 22 digs, while Morganne Longoria pitched in 20 digs, five aces and six assists.

Tay Lewis, meanwhile, had a team best 6.5 blocks, and also had seven kills. Senior Sam Webb added four aces – three against Westosha.

“Everyone was able to contribute,” Leach said.

The Demons open WIAA Division 1 tournament play Saturday evening. The No. 1 seed, Burlington will host the winner of the regional semifinal between No. 8 seed Stoughton and No. 9 seed Fort Atkinson.
