The Burlington High School girls tennis team continues to look for its first Southern Lakes Conference dual win of the season following a 4-3 loss to Delavan-Darien Thursday.
“It was right down to the wire, as usual, with us,” head coach Rose Dolatowski said.
Two of the seven matches went three sets, with the two teams splitting those two matches.
At No. 2 singles, Coral Miller outlasted Kylie Bliss. Miller won the first set 7-5, lost the second set 6-1, but came back to win the third set 7-6(0).
“She won the tiebreak 7-0,” Dolatowski noted. “She just really turned it on.”
The other three-set match came at No. 3 doubles where the Demon pairing of Rosie Uhen and Kayla Ludwig lost the opening set 6-4, came back to win the second set by an identical score, but lost dropped the deciding set 7-5.
The other two Demon wins came in doubles action.
Lydia Crabtree and Sierra Koenen won 6-3, 6-3 at No.1 doubles, while Paige Puntillo and Laura Christoph won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2.
Olivia Leuck, Sophie Grandi and Courtney Wieners all lost in straight sets at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Burlington finished fourth out of eight teams in the Green Bay Southwest Invite held Saturday, defeating Rhinelander 4-3, but losing 7-0 to Southwest and 6-1 to Stevens Point.
In the Rhinelander victory, Dolatowski had her usual doubles lineup in place, and all three were victorious.
That included Ali Zeman and Olivia Leuck at No. 1 doubles, Crabtree and Koenen at No. 2, and Christoph and Puntillo at No. 3.
The fourth Demon win came at No. 2 singles from Grandi.
“I was real pleased with this first match,” Dolatowski said of the win over Rhinelander.
In the second match, Burlington faced Green Bay Southwest and lost 7-0. The closest match came at No. 2 doubles where Crabtree and Koenen lost 6-3, 6-3.
“Southwest I kind of figured it would be tough,” Dolatowski said. “They are very solid.”
Dolatowski was disappointed with the team’s play in the third match, a 6-1 loss to Stevens Point.
“I think the girls ran out of gas,” she said.
In the Stevens Point, there were two matches that went three sets, and the Demons lost both of them. Those came at No. 4 singles (Wieners) and No. 3 doubles.
Grandi got Burlington’s only win – 6-1, 6-3 – at No. 2 singles.
