A 2-1 win over Port Washington Friday got the Burlington High School boys’ soccer team off to a good start this fall.
Two losses on Saturday, though, put a damper on the good start as the Demon boys fell 4-0 to Mukwonago and 2-0 to Wisconsin Rapids.
All three games were part of the Mukwonago Invitational.
Burlington got on the scoreboard 15 minutes into the Port Washington game off a goal by Hanson Olson.
“He scored on a header from a free kick, assisted by Mark Caringello,” noted head coach Phil Molitor.
It remained that way until 10 minutes into the second half when Port Washington tied the game at 1-1.
Ten minutes later, the Demons retook the lead on a shot from outside by senior Anthony Krebs. Caringello once again got the assists.
Molitor noted it was Krebs’ first game on the varsity.
“He was very excited,” Molitor said.
“We played very well,” Molitor added. “That was our best game of the tournament.”
Against Mukwonago, Molitor said the team played a very solid first half, and trailed only 1-0 at the break. The second half, though, was a different story, as Mukwonago scored three more times.
Mukwonago ended up winning its own tournament.
Molitor was not happy with the team’s play against Wisconsin Rapids.
“It was a team we, honestly, should have beaten,” he said. “The boys came out flat.”
Burlington had a chance five minutes into this game to score on a breakaway but was unable to convert. Seven minutes later, Wisconsin Rapids scored.
“That pretty much took everything out of my boys,” Molitor said.
Rapids got its second goal about halfway through the second half.
Molitor made special note of a play by sophomore backup goalkeeper Michael Pena. Pena stopped a penalty kick at about the 50th minute.
“That was about the only excitement for our team,” Molitor said.
A first half dominated by Fort Atkinson spelled a 4-0 defeat for the Demons at Fort Atkinson Tuesday.
Fort Atkinson scored all four of its goals in the first half, scoring in the 10th, 22nd and 34th minutes, and then getting its fourth goal in the final minute before the half.
“In the secondhalf, we played much better,” Molitor said. “My defense figured some things out.”
Molitor did note the play of Nolan Friend in goal.
“(He) played extremely well considering,” Molitor said.
The Demon boys will host Kenosha Tremper Thursday, Aug. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
On Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m. the boys will kick off their Southern Lakes Conference season against Delavan-Darien.
