For the first time in Tim Gesteland’s 15 years as head coach of the Burlington High School boys volleyball team, the Demons finished the Southeast Conference season undefeated.
The Demons put the finishing touches on that achievement Monday night, sweeping Kenosha Tremper 25-18, 25-22, 25-10.
BHS finished 9-0 in the SEC, and 27-0 in games – meaning the team swept all nine opponents.
“That was really cool,” said Gesteland. “We didn’t think very much about that.
“That’s just a special season.”
Tremper did not go down without a fight on its home court Monday night, though. In the second set, Gesteland said the Trojans started getting good touches on the Demons’ kill attempts.
But when Tremper got close, Gesteland liked what he saw from his team.
“I saw in some of their eyes that there is no way we will lose,” he said.
Junior Nolan Rueter paced BHS with 12 kills, while Nick Bartlett added 10, Carson Biedrzycki eight and Ben Geiger six.
Senior setter Zach Gesteland added 31 assists, three kills, two blocks and two digs, while Biedrzycki had three blocks and three digs and Rueter seven digs.
Senior libero Garrett Schilling pitched in a team-high 14 digs.
Burlington will wrap up the regular season Saturday by hosting the SEC boys tournament. BHS will be the No. 1 seed, and will face four other teams in pool play.
The top two teams from each pool will advance to the semifinals, with the top teams playing the No. 2 teams from each pool.
“(We want) to win it,” said Gesteland. “We’re pretty confident, with not losing a set, that we can win it, but with that comes a big target on our backs.
“I don’t think they’ll (the seniors) let us have a letdown.”
