Two days of sun and great shooting ended up with a familiar winner June 8-9 – Burlington High School.
The Southeast Wisconsin Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) High School Trapshooting Conference wrapped up its third season over that weekend with the conference shoot, held at the Waukesha Gun Club.
The Burlington Demons swept all three team categories, and had a particularly impressive performance from its varsity squad. The team of Jordan Hintz, Myles Walker, Cody Schilz, Ethan Kerr and Christian Jensen broke 488 of 500 targets, with Hintz and Walker shooting near-perfect 99s out of a possible 100.
Schilz broke 98 targets, Kerr 97 and Jensen 95.
The Demons were
followed by Wilmot’s Dakotah Gyger (98), Ryan Lipstteuer (97), Joseph Asleson (91), John Mcrae (91) and John Lass (89) who totaled 466 and Waterford’s 462 shot by Brett Strasser (94), Phil Davis (94), Hunter Swan (92), Travis Shecterle (92), Brandon Travis (90).
The Demons’ junior varsity team of Jacob Derosier (94), Daniel Santos (93), Clayton Deford (91), Nolan Schenning (87) and Alexa McCarthy (87) tallied 452 to best Westosha Central, which scored 442, and Jefferson, which carded a 430.
The Burlington Intermediates squad scored a 448 – a team total that would have won the JV meet. Cody McCarthy led the Demons with a 93, followed by Hunter Conrad’s 92.
Cullen Kruser pitched in a 90, Weston Uhlenhake an 89 and McKinley Herda an 84 to round out the team total for the squad.
Westosha’s intermediates took second with a 424 (led by Eddie Korando’s 93), while Wilmot took third with a 410.
But while BHS was dominating the team competition, one athlete from another squad posted the only perfect score of the day.
John Brunner of Union Grove hit 100 of 100 targets to earn the title of Grand Champion and a one-of-a-kind leather shell bag.
Other individual award winners were Hintz in the varsity division, edging out Walker on a tiebreaker with the twin 99s, with Gyger finishing third.
DeRosier earned the top JV award, followed by Tyler Perona of Westosha (93) and Santos.
In the intermediates, Marquette’s Henry Kurtzwell had the top score with a 96, followed by Burlington’s McCarthy and Central’s Korando.
Ladies awards went to Mariah Kerr of Burlington (91), Mecedez Jones of Westosha Central (90) and Christy Schneckloth of Central (88)

Burlington was also awarded the annual traveling team trophy for the
conference season finishing with a 10-0 record and 96.8 percent target-hit total.
Three hundred 64 athletes from Muskego, Cudahy, Oconomowoc, Jefferson, Badger, Waterford, Milwaukee Marquette, Burlington, Wilmot, Westosha, Union Grove and Racine Lutheran participated in the event, which was hosted by Marquette.
These twelve teams plus many more from throughout the state will compete in the Wisconsin Scholastic Clay Target Program State
Tournament at Waukesha Gun Club this Saturday.
