Friday night sports: BBW sets new record, Waterford basketball wins

The Burlington/Badger/Wilmot gymnastics team set a new standard in the Southern Lakes Conference Friday night – and in the state.

For the second time this year, the squad beat the existing state team record. BBW scored a record-high 150.225 Friday night at the SLC meet, beating the closest team by almost 25 points.

Waterford was second with a 125.400, while Elkhorn was third with a 123.425.

BBW swept the individual events, with Molly Benavides winning vault (9.675) and the all-around (37.675), Jenna Fitzpatrick the uneven bars (9.60), Michelle Dankle the balance beam (9.525) and Bailey Fitzpatrick the floor exercise (9.575).

Fitzpatrick was second in the all-around with a 37.650, while Waterford’s Grace Kubiak took third in the all-around with a 36.00. BBW had four of the six medalists on every event, and swept the top four spots on bars and floor – and the top three spots on the balance beam.

Kerry Leonard was second on beam for BBW with a 9.50, while Benavides was third with a 9.40.

BBW coach Diane Biedrzycki was thrilled with the team’s performance, but also knew there were still some places to improve.

“I always like to find room to go up,” Biedrzycki said. “We’ve got those couple things. The little things we’ve been working on are starting to come.”

In basketball action Friday night, the Waterford girls put themselves in position to have a shot at the SLC crown, beating Badger 50-45. Badger, Waterford, Union Grove and Wilmot now all have three losses.

Steffi Rank led Waterford with 23 points, while Megan Jensen added 14.0
