Throughout the second half of Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 sectional at Lake Country Lutheran High School, the Catholic Central High School girls cross country team moved up in the pack.

In the end, though, they didn’t quite move quite high enough.

Hoping for a berth at the WIAA state meet as a team, the Lady ’Toppers finished third with 76 points – just 11 points shy of second-place Living Word Lutheran.

The top two teams and top five individuals on non-qualifying teams earned trips to this weekend’s WIAA state meet in Wisconsin Rapids.

“As we look back at this season and see how these two teams have grown in a short amount of time, we can say only that we are so very proud and fortunate to be a part of it,” said CCHS coach Keith Mulhollan.

The boys finished fifth with 153 points.

In the girls race, sophomore Kathleen Straube posted a ninth-place finish, missing out on an individual trip to state by about 10 seconds.

Straube ran a time of 17:04.98, while Kourtney Mulhollon was 12th in 17:08.01. Cassie Reesman took 18th in 17:33.46, while senior Jennifer Smith was 19th in 17:34.80.

Patty Kempken was the final CCHS scorer, taking 23rd in 17:50.65.

On the boys side, CCHS was led by sophomore Sam Joski, who finished 11th in 18:01.96. He was the sixth-best individual finisher on a non-qualifying team.

Other scoring runners for CCHS were Mitch Vos in 28th (18:46.43), Jake Laforest in 40th in 19:04.54, Gavin Foote in 41st in 19:05.93, and Gavin Clayton in 45th in 19:10.54.
