The Catholic Central High School girls volleyball team didn’t face much of a challenge from its regional semifinal and regional final opponents last week.
If anything, the Lady Toppers faced a challenge from, of all things, a car accident.
The Lady Toppers played without standout senior Megan Wadsworth in the semifinal win over Hustisford, then had everyone on the court Saturday win a sweep of Monticello.
Wadsworth and other juniors on the team were driving back from a retreat when they were involved in a multi-car accident. Wadsworth didn’t even have her uniform, and had to leave to get cleared to play by her doctor.
By the time she returned, the Lady Toppers had won the first two games against Hustisford, 25-10, 25-15. CCHS played the final game without her as well, hanging on to win 25-23.
Three days later, Monticello fared no better, falling 25-22, 25-7, 25-11.
“As a coach, I am always happy when I see different athletes in each statistical category,” said coach MaeMae Oberhofer. “At this point of the season, having a well-rounded team is critical.”
Senior Maggie Smith had 16 kills against Hustisford, while Sara Seib had 10. In that match, Abby Tweet had five aces and Monica Litman four, while Olivia Sobbe had three block assists and Smith five.
In the regional final, Wadsworth posted 17 kills to 11 for Smith, while Kelly Gould had 29 assists. Litman had two aces and an 11-point run on her serve in game two, while Kelly Gould also had two aces. In the regional final, Smith had 19 digs and Wadsworth 15.
