The Catholic Central High School girls volleyball team continued its march through the Metro Conference last week.
The Lady ’Toppers swept Racine Lutheran 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 Sept. 18, then also swept Kenosha St. Joseph Sept. 20, 25-16, 30-28, 25-19.
Catholic Central improved to 20-5 overall with the win over St. Joseph, and 5-0 in the MCC.
Coach MaeMae Oberhofer was pleased with how her team battled against St. Joseph, especially after falling behind late in the second set against the Lancers.
“We gave them too many easy points and strayed away from our game plan a bit,” Oberhofer said about the second set. “With that being said, the team did a great job battling back.”
Maggie Smith led CCHS with 16 kills against St. Joseph, while Megan Wadsworth added 13 and Kelly Gould four.
Gould paced the Lady ’Toppers with 29 assists, while her sister, Sarah Gould, had four aces.
The Catholic Central defense also performed well, with Ali Wiemer picking up 22 digs, Brittany martin 13 and Wadsworth 12.
In the win over Racine Lutheran, Oberhofer said the team’s serving proficiency keyed the victory.
“We did a nice job serving efficiently and aggressively,” the coach explained. “Ninety-eight percent as a team, which allowed us to sideout efficiently.”
In addition, all six of Catholic Central’s primary defenders had at least 10 digs. Wiemer led the way with 17, while Kelly Gould and Smith added 11 each.
Smith had a team-high 16 kills, while Kelly Gould added six kills and 25 assists.
Sarah Gould, Monica Litman and Martin all had two aces each.
