1:49 p.m. – Sorry for the delay, folks. BHS wins set four 25-20, and the championship match between the Demons and Appleton North – the No. 2 and No. 1 seeds and ranked teams in the state – is set.
1:37 p.m. – BHS up 20-15, and Kettle Moraine calls its second timeout. The Demons can feel this. In the other court, North downs Marquette in four.
1:33 p.m. – Always fighting, BHS pulls ahead 15-12 and Kettle Moraine calls timeout.
1:19 p.m. – And now BHS/Kettle Moraine will go at least four, as KM takes set three 25-22.
1:17 p.m. – BHS calls timeout, down 23-21. Marquette won set three on the other court, so North/Marquette will go at least four.
1:09 p.m. – Again, the BHS composure comes through. Down by as many as six, the Demons have pulled back within 15-14 on some brilliant patience play, taking this one point at a time.
1 p.m. – BHS can suddenly do nothing right, all sorts of problems here to start set three. Coach Gesteland quickly calls timeout down 6-1, and tries to settle the troops.
12:55 p.m. – And again, BHS just settles down and gets the job done! Joey Osmolek goes and gets a HUGE block with teammate Ben Geiger on set point, giving BHS set two 25-22. The composure shown by this BHS team falls right into what coach Tim Gesteland has said all year long: this team gets neither too high nor too low. That paid off with that questionable call near the end of the set, as the Demons just rolled with it.
12:53 p.m. – And now we’re at set point BHS after brilliant defense by the Demons, a kill by Rueter and then a hitting error by KM.
12:51 p.m. – We’re tied at 22-22 after BHS got a call against them at 22-20 that looked like a four-hit by KM and the up ref ruled a touch. KM then hit an ace, and we’re tied.
12:48 p.m. – Deja vu. BHS runs off two straight points and suddenly KM calls timeout at 22-20. This time, beautiful kill by Nolan Rueter on a Nick Bartlett set.
12:46 p.m. – Great back and forth action in this second set. BHS calls timeout again at 20-20.
12:28 p.m. – BHS wins set one, 25-21, on a spike kill by Carson Biedrzycki. The senior looked to have the set point at 25-20, but his hand just contacted the net on a hard spike on an overpass by KM.
12:26 p.m. – TOWERING block by BHS’s Carson Biedrzycki and Zach Gesteland, and Kettle Moraine calls timeout with the Demons at set point 24-20.
12:24 p.m. – And just like that, BHS rolls off two points to go ahead 22-20 and Kettle Moraine calls a timeout. On the other court, top-seeded Appleton North leads defending champion Milwaukee Marquette in set one.
12:22 p.m. – This has been a tight first set so far, with equal parts great hits and shaky errors. We’re tied at 20-20, as BHS just called a timeout after watching what has been a 2-3 point lead for most of the set vanish.
12:07 p.m. – And we are ready to go. We will update at every game break.
11:59 a.m. – By the way, All-State awards were announced yesterday. BHS seniors Garrett Schilling and Zach Gesteland earned first-team honors, while Nolan Rueter was a second-team pick and Carson Biedrzycki an honorable mention.
But the big honor of the day went to BHS head coach Tim Gesteland, who was named Coach of the Year by the boys coaching association.
Good morning, folks! We are live at the WIAA state boys volleyball tournament, where Burlington High School is warming up to play Kettle Moraine in a state semifinal. The Demons downed Catholic Memorial 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22 last night to earn their first-ever state tournament win.
