This was a team on a mission.
Having split with Divine Savior Holy Angels during the regular season, the Burlington High School girls volleyball team fought every step of the way Saturday night, winning 29-27, 25-20, 25-16 over DSHA.
It is the second straight state title for the Demons on four consecutive state appearances.
Among the highlights for BHS this season:
* The Demons lost just two matches all season long – one to DSHA and one to East Troy.
* BHS lost just nine sets all season long.
* The Demons spent all but one week on top of the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association Division 1 rankings.
6:58 p.m. – BHS wins set three and the state title, 25-16. More coming in a bit.
6:43 p.m. – Get ready, Burlington – two titles in two divisions yet again? BHS up 21-14 in set three!
6:38 – Just tight, tight, tight play. BHS has a small run and a 15-12 lead, leading DSHA to call a timeout.
6:25 p.m. – BHS wins set two, 25-20, and owns a two set to nothing lead with an ace by Robyn Robers that just brushed the DSHA libero.
6:20 p.m. – Again, Burlington is responding to the pressure. With DSHA within a point at 18-17, BHS has won four of the last five points and leads 22-18 in set two.
6:12 p.m. – BHS forces DSHA to call a timeout, leading 14-10 in set two. However, BHS has been fighting every step of the way in this game, actually trailing 9-6 with DSHA libero Emme Granger serving. Both Granger and BHS libero Morganne Longoria are getting a workout.
5:56 p.m. – If that was a test, then the Demons just passed. Down 24-22, the Demons rallied to tie the score, then trailed by a point in the “two-point margin” format several times. A DSHA error finally gave BHS set point, and a kill by BHS freshman Quinn Spieker sealed the set, 29-27.
Neither team has really blinked. While Capezio and Menonomee Falls’ Simone Lee took swipe after swipe at the ball last night, this is more calculated – more of a back-and-forth match with a great deal more tension.
5:49 – And it’s back to a 22-all tie, with DSHA’s Caitlyn Coffey blocking Ciara Capezio to tie the score. BHS timeout.
5:46 p.m. – Back and forth first set, and DSHA is the first to blink, with a timeout at 20-17 with BHS ahead.
5:23 p.m. – Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for the national anthem and introductions. Back in a few.
