Burlington High School’s No. 1 doubles team of Ali Zeman and Olivia Leuck advanced out of the Burlington sub-sectional Monday.

The duo was scheduled to compete Wednesday at the Badger sectional. Results were not available before press deadline.

“They started out a little slow in the first set,” head coach Rose Dolatowski said the 7-5, 6-2 win. “They took control in the second set.”

Zeman and Leuck was down 4-0 in the first set, but came back to win seven of the next eight games to take the opening set over a Janesville Parker pair.

Because they were playing at No. 1 doubles, Zeman and Leuck only needed to win the one match to advance to sectional.

“Their goal is to get to state,” Dolatowski noted.

No other Demon girl or pairing advanced to sectional.

The only other player to win a match was Courtney Wieners at No. 4 singles. Wieners had to win a qualifying match over a Janesville Parker opponent, and did so by a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 score. She lost her next match, though.

Dolatowski was disappointed that her No. 2 doubles team of Lydia Crabtree and Sierra Koenen did not advance to sectional.

Crabtree and Koenen, the No. 1 seed in their bracket, lost to Waterford’s Emily Roghan and Taylor Webb in their opening match in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

“That was kind of a shocking loss,” Dolatowski said.

Crabtree and Koenen had not faced Roghan and Webb earlier this season, since Roghan and Webb usually competed at No. 3 doubles. An injury to a Waterford player moved that pairing into the No. 2 doubles bracket.

Dolatowski noted, though, that Crabtree and Koenen had a great season in their first year playing together.

Another disappointment came at No. 3 doubles where Paige Puntillo and Laura Christoph were seeded No. 2. They lost their opening match, though, to a Delavan duo, 7-6 (1), 6-1.

Puntillo and Christoph led 6-5 in the first set, but could not secure the win.

“All of a sudden they couldn’t keep the ball in,” Dolatowski said. “They made lots of errors.”
