The Burlington High School track and field squads advanced 10 individuals in 12 events out of the WIAA Division 1 regional at Badger High School in Lake Geneva Monday.
Each squad had two regional champions, with Meagan Hegeman and Kaysie Shebeneck winning for the Demon girls, and Garrett Riggs and Max Shenkenberg winning for the Demon boys.
The boys’ squad placed fourth as a team in the nine-team regional, talling 85.5 points. Waterford won the boys’ side with 143 points.
Riggs won the pole vault, clearing 12 feet three inches. Brandon Aguirre took second in that event, clearing 12 feet.
Riggs also qualified in the long jump, finishing third.
Shenkenberg won the triple jump with a leap of 43-0 1/2 inches. Shenkenberg also qualified in the long jump, placing fourth.
Other Demon boys who qualified for sectionals (the top four in each event qualified) were Skyler Vandusseldorp (third, high jump) and Ross Canales (fourth, high jump).
On the girls’ side, Hegeman won the triple jump with a leap of 34-05.0, while Shebeneck won the shot put with a throw of 34-11.5.
Other Demon girls who qualified for sectionals were Hannah Wills (second, long jump), Audra Weis (third, pole vault) and Katie Sorensen (fourth, 300 hurdles).
Weis was a state qualifier in the pole vault last year.
Wills has been consistently jumping over 16 feet the last few weeks.
Among the eight girls’ teams, Burlington was fifth with 71.5 points. Badger was tops among the girls’ squads with 128.5 points.
The WIAA Division 1 sectional takes place at Waterford on Thursday, May 24, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The top three finishers in each event at sectionals qualify for state.
Waterford
Although the goal is to advance as many athletes on to sectionals as possible, it is still nice when a team can win a tough post-season event.
That was the case for the Waterford High School boys’ track and field squad Monday at the WIAA Division 1 regional held at Badger High School in Lake Geneva.
The Wolverine boys edged Kenosha Bradford by one point – 143-142 – to win the regional.
The Wolverine girls also performed well, finishing third with 112 points. Badger won the girls’ side of the regional with 128.5 points. Kenosha Tremper was second with 113.
The Wolverine boys were led by Tony and Kurt Sustachek, Dylan Dessart, Bryce Rudebeck, Brandon Miller, Mitch Pallon, Ben Pollock and Jay Espada.
Tony Sustachek won both the 800 and 1,600, with brother Kurt placing fourth in both.
Since the top 4 finishers in each event advance to sectionals, both will be competing at the next level.
Rudebeck won the 200 and finished second in the 400 in a season-best time.
Dessart took top honors in the long jump, and was third in the 100.
T.J. Toy had the final win for the Wolverine boys in the 300 hurdles.
Pallan finished right behind Rudebeck in the 200.
Third-place finishes were captured by Miller in the shot put, Pollock in the pole vault and Espada in the triple jump.
The 4×800 relay team took second, while the 4×100 was fourth.
Jenny Gilbreath was very impressive for the Wolverine girls. She won the long jump and the 200, and took second in the 400. In addition, she ran the anchor leg on the 4×400 relay team that placed second.
Four additional girls finished in second in their respective events.
Hannah Jost was second in the 1,600, Nikki Grant second in the pole vault, Holly Neubauer second in the high jump, and Bekah Raebel second in the shot put.
All four the Wolverine girls’ relay teams qualified for sectional. Besides the second-place finish by the 4×400, the 4×200 and 4×100 each took third, and the 4×800 placed fourth.
Union Grove
Four Bronco girls qualified for the WIAA Division 1 sectionals after placing in the top four in six different events at the track and field regionals held at Mukwonago Monday.
The Union Grove High School track and field squads were led by sophomore Cassy Goodrich. Goodrich won the 400-meter dash in 58.81 seconds, took second in the 200 in 25.94, and second in the 100 in 12.72 seconds.
In the 200, Goodrich reset the school record she had broken earlier this season. The new record is now 25.94 seconds.
The other three Bronco girls who qualified for sectionals were Emily Hebron (second, 400), Madelyn Schwartz (third, 800) and Alyssa Acker (fourth, pole vault).
Mikula noted that midway through this season, Hebron found her niche in the 400.
Schwartz’s time of 2:26.59 was a personal best.
Acker got in to sectionals by means of a jump off. Acker and Alex Albrecht of Pius XI had both cleared 9-0. Both were given one jump at 9-6. Acker cleared it, and Albrecht did not.
This is the second year in a row that Acker will be at sectionals.
The top four finishers in each event advanced to sectional competition.
As a team, Union Grove was seventh among nine teams in the girls’ competition with 47 points. Wisconsin Lutheran had the top team score with 137.5 points.
On the boys’ side, Union Grove was ninth with 17 points. Mukwonago took top honors with 202 points.
No boys advanced to sectionals. The biggest disappointment came in the high jump where Kurt Petersen failed to advance.
Petersen had set the school record earlier this spring, clearing 6 feet 5 inches and was consistently clearing 6-0 to 6-2.
At regionals, Petersen entered the competition when the bar was at 5-10. His first two attempts he failed to clear the bar. On the third attempt, he cleared the bar, but his heel caught the bar and brought it down.
The four Broncos competed in the WIAA Division 1 sectional held at Wisconsin Lutheran High School on Thursday.
Catholic Central
The Catholic Central High School track and field team enjoyed a successful day Monday at the WIAA Division 1 regional at Deerfield, with both the boys and girls finishing fifth overall.
The girls qualified one individual and three relays, while the boys qualified six individuals in five events plus two relays.
Catholic Central finished with three individual victories on the day. Sophomore Megan Wadsworth won the girls 100-meter dash in 12.84, while Carson Meinholz won the boys 400-meter run in 51.14 and Jeremy Lemke the 800 in 2:06.04.
In addition, Ethan Sobbe finished fourth in the 400 to qualify, while Collin Foote finished second in the high jump, Calvin Kempkin second in the shot put and Kyle Kresken fourth in the shot put.
The top four individuals and relays qualified for today’s sectional meet at Princeton.
The girls 4×100 relay of Sophie Foote, Monica Litman, Shelby Frederick and Wadsworth won in 51.64, as did the same team in the 4×200 relay (1:51.34).
The 4×400 relay of Cassie Reesman, Kathleen Straube, Kourtney Mulhollon and Ashley Reesman finished second to qualify.
On the boys side, the 4×100 and 4×200 relay both finished first. The 4×100 relay was comprised of T.J. Walkington, Nick Ulloa, Paul Lloyd and Rayce Wadsworth, while the 4×200 relay was Walkington, Ulloa, Lloyd and Meinholz.
