After a season-opening 2-1 win, the Burlington High School boys soccer team has found it difficult to score goals. In the past five games, the Demons have been outscored 17-0, and now stand at 1-5 overall.
On Tuesday, Delavan-Darien handed the Demons their latest loss, 4-0.
Head coach Phil Molitor said that in the first minute of action, Burlington nearly took a 1-0 lead.
“We cross a cross (from Christian Pompa) to a header (by Hanson Olson),” Molitor said. “He hit it off the crossbar. A beautiful play.”
Mark Caringello picked up the rebound off the crossbar and fired on goal, sending it just over the crossbar.
Molitor said if his team would have scored that goal, it could have changed the entire game.
Delavan-Darien led just 1-0 at the half on a goal in the 17th minute.
“We do fairly well for a half and then fall apart,” Molitor said, adding he was encouraged with his team’s play the first half.
It remained 1-0 until the Comets scored in the 63rd and 69th minutes. A goal in the 80th minute finished off the scoring.
In this non-conference game at home Aug. 23, Tremper bested the Demons 3-0, although Molitor was pleased with the boys’ effort.
“The boys played really well,” he noted.
Tremper got on the board about 10 minutes into the game on a penalty kick and it remained that way until halfway through the second half when Tremper scored again to make it 2-0.
Tremper scored its final goal in the 73rd minute as Burlington was a man down.
In the 70th minute, freshman Kolin Schuerman was issued a red card due to unsportsmanlike conduct, putting the Demons a man down the rest of the game.
Molitor indicated the play of senior Eric Aquirre in the center midfield was strong.
“He played very, very well and could be the answer to some of my problems (in the midfield area),” he said.
On Thursday, Aug. 28, the Demon boys will travel to Westosha Central for an SLC matchup.
Next week, they will host Wilmot in an SLC game on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 6:30 p.m.
