The Burlington/Badger/Wilmot gymnastics team picked a bad day to have a bad meet.
The squad still scored a 145.116, but mistakes on the vault and balance beam opened the door for Franklin/Muskego/Oak Creek/Whitnall to win its second straight title with a team score of 147.648.
“We were just off,” said BBW coach Diane Biedrzycki.
Live updates from the meet are below:
Rotation 1: Franklin/Muskego/Whitnall/Oak Creek did a great job on Division 1 floor, really hitting all of their elements and selling the routines to the crowd. The team’s four counting scored were between 9.3 and 9.5, great for being the first team on the event today.
Rotation 2: Waterford is on bars for Division 2. Grace Kubiak anchored the squad with an 8.967, and everyone else hit their routines for the Wolverines, but the scores won’t be particularly high because of a lack of difficulty.
Rotation 3: BBW was solid if unspectacular on vault. Molly Benavides scored a 9.517 as the last vaulter, and Robynanne Scheuerman scored a 9.217. However, the next three scores were between 8.7 and 8.5 – for vaults that had been scoring .5-.8 higher in previous weeks. That’s not commentary on the judging, just a basis of comparison for how BBW performed.
Rotation 4: Waterford did a nice job on beam with one fall and one routine with a large error. Grace Kubiak anchored the rotation with a beautiful routine with full difficulty.
Rotation 5: Whatever jitters BBW may have had on vault were gone by the uneven bars. Marlee Brunow started off the rotation with a great routine, and everyone hit from there. Molly Benavides, Bailey Fitzpatrick and Jenna Fitzpatrick went 9.25, 9.433 and 9.533 to anchor the bars set.
Rotation 6: Frankego hit bars nicely, with consistent scores all over 9.0. This meet will now come down to who hits the balance beam – and if BBW can capitalize as the last team up on floor.
Rotation 7: BBW struggles on balance beam, with three of the five competitors falling off the beam. The high score came from Molly Benavides, with a 9.183 on the event after a weird hitch on a leap series. Michelle Dankle also hit for an 8.8, while Bailey Fitzpatrick had an 8.85 with a fall on her tumbling series. Waterford hit the floor exercise, with all five routines pretty clean.
Rotation 8: Frankego hits all five beam routines, and will be back-to-back state champions. The only question now is the margin of victory. We’ll be back with final scores.
Rotation 10: BBW was solid on floor, but not their best. The team knew going out that the team title was out of reach, and some air seemed to be out of their sails. Still, the team got good routines that should solidify second place.
