Saturday at state track and field

Saturday news for local competitors at the WIAA state track and field meet:

4:25 p.m. – Westosha Central’s Lauren Ineichen wins the girls Division 1 high jump. She cleared 5 feet, 6 inches – one inch ahead of her competitors. Also, Burlington’s Max Shenkenburg was 22nd in the Division 1 boys triple jump.

Also, one final missed earlier: the CCHS boys 4×200 finished 10th in the final.

4:07 p.m. – Goodrich is seventh.

4:00 p.m. – Union Grove’s Cassy Goodrich is tied with another runner at 25.57, for sixth. One of them will be on the podium, one will not. Please hold.

3:47 p.m. – Union Grove’s Maddie Schwartz just ran another PR, 2:24.12 in the 800, which will likely place her 20th in the Division 1 field.

3:45 p.m. – Riggs matched his personal best of 14-6 to tie for fifth in the pole vault.

2:54 p.m. – No final results, but we do know that Burlington’s Garrett Riggs medaled in the Division 1 pole vault. Pius’ Kaewon Reynolds won by clearing 15 feet, 6 inches. Riggs’ best effort this year was 14-6, so as soon as we known what he cleared, we will post it.

2:38 p.m. – Field results update: Jenny Gilbreath, Waterford, 18th in the long jump with a best jump of 15 feet, 9 inches. Still waiting on the Division 1 girls high jump and the Division 1 boys pole vault.

2:20 p.m. – Catholic Central’s girls 4×100 relay appeared to have a less-than-smooth handoff from runner one to two, and in a very deep, very fast field, it was enough to keep the relay from holding its No. 2 seed. The Lady Toppers were fourth in 50.98.

2:18 p.m. – The WIAA feed is showing the girls D1 400 medal ceremony, and Cassy Goodrich is beaming ear to ear.

2:15 p.m. – Waterford’s Bryce Rudebeck comes back from a brutally fast opening leg on the 4×800 relay team to place fifth in the 400 in 49.47. That’s his second fifth-place medal of the day, if you’re into symmetry.

2:10 p.m. – We are still waiting on several field event results, and as the camera on the live feed does not go there, it is impossible to tell any results until the results are posted. We will update as soon as possible.

2:08 p.m. – Carson Meinholz of Catholic Central grabs a medal as well, finishing fourth in the D3 400. He faded a little down the stretch, but held on for a time of 49.89.

Also, Collin Foote failed to medal in the D3 boys high jump, clearing just the opening height of 5 feet, 10 inches.

2:05 p.m. – Two different area entries in the girls Division 1 400-meter run – Waterford’s Jenny Gilbreath and Union Grove’s Cassy Goodrich – Goodrich in lane 7 and Gilbreath in lane 8. Goodrich leaned at the tape, 57.49 for second, while Gilbreath takes eighth in 58.85.

1:03 p.m. – Just received splits from the Waterford track coach for that record-breaking Waterford relay. Bryce Rudebeck led off with a 1:54.4, followed by a 1:58.3 from Kurt Sustachek, a 2:01.7 from Mitch Singer and a 1:51.9 for Tony Sustachek.

12:36 p.m. – How fast was the boys’ 4×800 relay? Brookfield Central and Arrowhead, finishing 1-2, broke the old state record, and the other five medalists were all within five seconds of the old state record.

12:30 p.m. – Results are now official for everything below.

12:10 p.m. – Union Grove’s Cassy Goodrich ran a good race, but couldn’t keep up with another Milwaukee Bradley Tech standout, Elexis Fuller-Stewart, who won in 11.80. Goodrich did improve on her seed, finishing eighth in 12.62.

12:05 p.m. – It appears Catholic Central’s Megan Wadsworth finishes seventh in the 100-meter dash in Division 3. She got a slow start, but battled at the finish and looked like she got leaned out for a medal. Again, results are unofficial, and the WIAA live results are not yet working.

Noon – a text from Waterford coach Nate Schreiber confirms that is not only a new school record, but a school record by 16 seconds for the Wolverines. It is also just about four seconds off the old state record held by Monroe, but that appeared to have been broken today.

11:30 a.m. – Bryce Rudebeck ran a great opening leg for the Wolverines, splitting about a 1:55.00. He handed off to Kurt Sustachek in a tight pack at the front. Kurt Sustachek, who was forced to drop out of the 800 and 1,600 at sectionals after running hard in the 4×800, ran another great leg, at or near the front the whole way.

The third runner for Waterford, who I am assuming is Mitch Singer, dropped back some, falling back in the 3-5 places area. Arrowhead was way out front, but the baton went to Tony Sustachek.

Sustachek ran in fifth for the entire first lap, and stayed there. The time appears good enough to stand up for a fifth-place medal for the Wolverines – an approximate 7:46.15. I’m willing to bet that’s a new school record.

11:05 a.m. – We are waiting for the start of the boys Division 1 4×800 relay, second heat, where Waterford is the No. 5 seed. That really will include the Sustachek brothers, one of which – Tony – finished sixth in the individual 800 yesterday in a new school-record time of 1:54.22.
