Burlington
The Burlington High School boys track and field team had a number of standout performances Tuesday afternoon at the Southern Lakes Conference meet at BHS.
It just wasn’t enough to keep up with the juggernaut that is the Waterford Union High School team.
The BHS boys came away with three event titles, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Waterford’s overall depth, as the Wolverines scored 196.5 points. BHS was second with 123.5 points.
The BHS girls finished third behind Badger (170.5) and Waterford (157.5) with 103 points.
For the boys, the field events continued to be a strong point, as the Demons got a 1-2 finish in the pole vault from Garrett Riggs and Brandon Aguirre, and a win in the triple jump by Max Shenkenberg.
Riggs cleared 13 feet, 9 inches in winning the pole vault, while Aguirre cleared 12 feet. Shenkenberg’s best jump was 42 feet, 11 inches.
Ross Canales tied his season best of 5-10 to finish second in the high jump, and was also fourth in the triple jump (39-10).
The third win for the boys came from Cody Mather, who took the 300 hurdles in 42.92 seconds. Andrew Gauger was third in the event in 43.46.
Riggs also posted a pair of third-place finishes, in the 100-meter dash (11.66) and the 200-meter dash (23.44).
Matt Gierahn had the final top-three individual finish, taking third in the 400 in 52.35, while the boys 4×800 relay of Zach Wawrzyniakowski, Stephan Belau, Noah Strohm and Finn Finnucane was third in 8:43.33.
For the girls, junior Audra Weis had the best day, clearing 10 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault and also finishing third in the 400 in 1:02.51.
Meagan Hegeman also won the triple jump with a best leap of 32-5, while Hannah Wills was second in the long jump (16-6). Kaysie Shebeneck continued her stretch of shot put victories, taking the event with a best throw of 35 feet, 1 1/2 inches.
Katie Sorensen finished second in the 300 hurdles in 50.98 and third in the 100 hurdles (time not available). The 4×800 relay of Ellen Stang, Coriann Dorgay, Caitlin Yonash and Michelle Kleitsch was second in 10:19.44.
Waterford
One rain delay, one timing system error, one school record and eight wins turned out to be a magical combination for the Waterford Union High School boys track and field team Tuesday at the Southern Lakes Conference meet.
The Wolverines dominated the boys field, easily outdistancing the host Demons with 196.5 points for the title. BHS scored 123.5 points.
On the girls side, the Wolverines were second to Badger, 170.5 points to 157.5.
Final results were delayed Tuesday night due to issues with the timing system. However, it didn’t keep Waterford’s 1-2 brotherly punch of Tony and Kurt Sustachek from dominating again.
Tony Sustachek broke the Waterford boys 800-meter run record for the second time in a week, recording a time of 1:55.29 for the victory. Kurt, who had helped push his brother to the original record last week in Wauwatosa, finished second in 1:57.66.
Tony added a second victory by taking the 1,600-meter run in 4:36.72. Kurt was third in the event in 4:38.25.
The two brothers weren’t the only ones having a great day, though. Senior Bryce Rudebeck swept the sprint events, winning the 100 in 11.49, the 200 in 22.76 and the 400 in 50.79.
Union Grove’s Cassy Goodrich did the same sweep on the girls side of the meet.
In addition to Rudebeck’s win, Dylan Dessart was second in the 100 (11.60), and Mitch Pallan was second in the 200 (23.22).
Brandon Miller added a win in the shot put, throwing a best of 49 feet, 8 1/2 inches. Brandon Schindler was second in the event (45-1 1/2), while Dustin Schindler was third in the discus (139-6).
The Wolverines added a pair of relay wins, with Kody Brand, Mitch Singer, Karl Chic and Matt Hulsether winning the 4×800 in 8:35.01 and Chic, Singer and the two Sustachek brothers taking the 4×400 in 3:36.23.
Rounding out the boys top-three finishes were Grant Brooks, second in the 3,200 (10:02.37), Cal Jaskie, third in the high jump (5-10), and Mitch Pallan and Dessart, second and third in the long jump (19-8 3/4, 19-4 1.2).
On the girls side, junior Jenny Gilbreath had the distinction of finishing second behind Goodrich in the 100 (13.29), 200 (26.40) and 400 (1:00.66).
Hannah Jost won the 3,200 in 12:11.11 and was second in the 1,600, while Valerie Knurr won the long jump (17 feet).
Holly Neubauer tied for second in the high jump by clearing 5-2, while the 4×100 relay of Abbie Pelton, Hannah Zimmerman, Natalie Erickson and Sam Dziak won in 52.19.
Union Grove
It was more of the same Tuesday afternoon for Union Grove super sophomore Cassy Goodrich – and senior Kurt Petersen.
Goodrich was one of two athletes to sweep the sprint events at Tuesday’s Southern Lakes Conference meet at Burlington High School, while Petersen won the boys high jump.
The Union Grove girls finished fifth with 62 points, while the boys were sixth with 56 points.
Goodrich led the way, winning the 100 in 13.02 (run into a headwind), the 200 in 26.07) and the 400 in 58.70. Waterford’s Bryce Rudebeck swept the same events on the boys side.
Petersen, meanwhile, was the only high jumper to clear six feet, and won the event by two inches with that clearance.
In addition for the Broncos, Madelyn Schwartz was second in the girls 800 in 2:27.84, while Kadi Walusay was second in the discus with a best throw of 96 feet, 1 inch. Allie Rainey added a third-place finish in the shot put (30-5 3/4).
For the boys, Ryan Rebernick was third in the shot put (44-10), and Union Grove had a pair of second-place relays.
The 4×800 relay of Tim Christensen, Logan Kohlhagen, Justin DeLong and Matt Quinn was second in 8:41.78, while the 4×400 relay of Andy Hatch, Dennis Hebron, Quinn and Kyle Martinez was second in 3:38.34.
