Standouts for the week of Dec. 28, 2012

Male Co-Athletes of the Week

Jayden Essman, Burlington High School boys basketball: Essman, whose coach said this week does all the little things that don’t show up on a stats sheet, lit up the BHS stats sheet against Badger Friday night.

Essman finished with a game-high 12 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end, as BHS downed Badger 60-46.

Essman also had seven points, three steals and three assists in the victory.

Carson Biedrzycki, Burlington High School boys basketball: Biedrzycki hit the game-winning shot with about 20 seconds left Dec. 18 to give BHS a 47-45 win over Elkhorn.

Biedrzycki, who leads the Demons in scoring, added 21 points Friday night in a 60-46 win over Badger Friday night.

Romo Watch

With a number of complex situations set to play out in terms of playoff berths and seedings in the NFC in the final week of the regular season, the Dallas Cowboys have a simple scenario – win and they are in.

The Cowboys came up just short in Week 16 against the New Orleans Saints, losing 34-31 in overtime.

Dallas came from behind thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Tony Romo in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t score on the first possession of overtime. The Saints advanced the ball to the 2-yard line on a fumble, and kicked the game-winning field goal.

Romo had another strong effort for the Cowboys, completing 26 of 43 passes for 416 yards, averaging 9.7 yards per throw. He also connected on four touchdown passes – the first two to Dez Bryant and then to Dwayne Harris and Miles Austin in the fourth quarter.

Dallas scored twice in the final 3:35 of the game to force overtime.

Number of the Week

1 – The number of games that went off as scheduled Dec. 20. A predicted snowstorm dumped less than two inches of snow on the Burlington area, but still managed to cancel virtually all scheduled athletic contests that night. The only exception was the Catholic Central High School girls basketball game, which the Lady ’Toppers lost to Racine St. Catherine’s.

Quote of the Week

It’s the little things…

“You don’t keep stats on the things he does. It’s a huge thing to have him playing well.”

– Burlington High School boys basketball coach Steve Berezowitz on senior Jayden Essman.
