Female Athletes of the Week
Stephanie Rank, Waterford Union High School girls’ basketball: In a pair of games last week, the senior showed why she is considered one of the best players in the Southern Lakes Conference.
In a 49-46 loss to Union Grove at Union Grove Jan. 3, Rank had 24 points – and 24 rebounds.
On Friday, the Wolverines pulled the biggest upset of the SLC season so far, beating Lake Geneva Badger (previously undefeated in the conference) 49-39 at home.
In the Badger game, Rank had 26 points and eight rebounds. In addition, Rank and the rest of the Waterford defense held Lana Wieseman – averaging 20 points per game – to just 12 points.
Bailey Fitzpatrick, Burlington/Badger/Wilmot gymnastics: The record book at the Falcon Invite at Westosha Central holds some of the best names in the state.
And that list now includes the BBW freshman gymnast. Placing in the top three on each of the four events and winning two, Fitzpatrick claimed the all-around title at the Falcon Invite with a meet-record 37.65 total.
Fitzpatrick won the vault with a 9.6 and the balance beam with a 9.25. She was also second on the floor with a 9.50 and third on the uneven bars with a 9.30.
BBW also won the team title with a 145.625 team total.
Team of the Week
The Burlington High School wrestling team: Exactly what else the BHS wrestling team needs to do to be recognized by the state pundits is unclear.
However, after winning their home six-team invite Saturday, one would hope it wouldn’t take much more. The Demons defeated three ranked teams – Division 1 No. 12 Fort Atkinson, Division 3 No. 5 Mineral Point and Division 1 No. 5 Mukwonago – in going undefeated Saturday.
Five Demons went undefeated in their five matches. They were freshman Ben Hornickle at 106, senior Derek Gill at 126, junior Brody Fitzpatrick at 138, senior Willie Ehlen at 145 or 152, and senior Brandt Gavin at 160.
Also considered: The Waterford Union High School boys’ basketball team.
