Male Athlete of the Week
Carson Biedrzycki, Burlington High School boys basketball: Playing perhaps his best game of the year – amid the Demons playing one of their best games of the year – Biedrzycki was a big part of BHS’s 75-55 win over Kenosha Bradford last week.
Biedrzycki was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, hit one of only two 3-pointers for the Demons and scored a game-high 21 points in Burlington’s victory.
For the season, Biedrzycki is averaging 11.1 points per game for the Demons.

Female Athlete of the Week
Grace Kubiak, Waterford Union High School gymnastics: Kubiak had her best meet of the year Jan. 19 as Waterford defeated Whitewater.
Kubiak posted career-high scores on the uneven bars (8.85) and the floor exercise (9.45) en route to winning the all-around with a score of 36.875.
Kubiak won all four events at the meet, including scoring a 9.375 on vault and a 9.20 on the balance beam.
Also considered: Michelle Dankle, Burlington/Badger/Wilmot gymnastics.
Team of the Week
Waterford Union High School gymnastics: While Burlington/Badger/Wilmot may be the best team in the Southern Lakes Conference (and the state) this year, the Wolverines have quietly been improving week by week this year.
The Wolverines posted a season-best score Jan. 19 in defeating Whitewater 125.125 to 95.45.
In addition to Kubiak’s strong performance, the Wolverines had their best totals of the year on bars, beam and floor.
Ambria Noll broke the 8.0 mark on floor with an 8.475, while Kailee Helget passed that mark on vault with an 8.1.
Also considered: The Burlington High School boys basketball team; the Waterford Union High School wrestling team.
Number of the Week
6 – The total number of points separating the four teams in Sunday’s AFC and NFC championship games. The New England Patriots hung on to defeat Baltimore when a last-second field goal missed, 23-20, and the New York Giants went to overtime to defeat the San Francisco 49ers by a field goal, 20-17.
Blue Devils
The Southern Lakes Blue Devils will hold open tryouts on two different dates.
Tryouts will be Jan. 29 at Sturtevant Sportsplex and the second Feb. 11 at the Milwaukee Sports Complex in Franklin.
The Franklin date will have registration at 11 a.m. with tryouts from noon to 2 p.m. The Sturtevant date will have a 9 a.m. registration with tryouts from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

State rankings
The Burlington High School wrestling team, with seven wrestlers ranked in the top 15 in their weight classes, finally broke into the Wisconsin Wrestling Online team rankings this week.
The Demons are ranked No. 7 in Division 1, the highest ranked team in their sectional. Mukwonago dropped to 11th and Fort Atkinson to 12th.
Burlington’s highest ranked individual is Willie Ehlen, ranked third at 145 pounds. Also in the top five for the Demons is Derek Gill; fourth at 126 pounds, and Brandt Gavin, fourth at 152 pounds. Ryan Jazdzewski is eighth at 170 pounds.
The only other team with ranked area wrestlers is Waterford, with undefeated Kody Azarian fourth at 120 pounds, Austin Christenson ninth at 145 pounds, Cody Nannemann 14th at 152 pounds and Francisco Mata 14th at 195 pounds.
