Male Athlete of the Week
Zach Gesteland, Burlington High School boys volleyball: For the first time in Burlington High School boys volleyball, a team member was named Southeast Conference Player of the Year.
Gesteland earned the honor last week, and also helped BHS to the SEC tournament title on the school’s home court Saturday.
Gesteland had 97 assists on the day at the SEC tournament, as Burlington beat Racine Horlick in the semifinals and then Racine Case in the finals.
While Burlington has had a number of players earn All-State recognition, it is the first time a player topped the SEC list.

Female Athlete of the Week
Ciara Capezio, Burlington High School girls volleyball: The Burlington High School girls volleyball team saw another dominant performance from its senior outside hitter Saturday, as the Demons posted a 25-12, 25-12, 25-16 win over Stoughton to win the regional title.
Capezio, who is widely considered one of the best players in the state, along with senior teammates Morganne Longoria and Kaysie Shebeneck, picked up 19 kills against Stoughton. Many of the balls were untouchable, coming in at an angle that were hard if not impossible to block.
Capezio also had 11 digs in the match.

Team of the Week
Catholic Central High School girls volleyball: With junior standout Megan Wadsworth sidelined for last week’s regional semifinal against Hustisford because of a car accident, the Lady ’Toppers were forced to exercise their depth.
It worked out in the end, as CCHS swept both Hustisford and then Monticello en route to the WIAA Division 4 regional crown.
In the regional semifinal, Olivia Sobbe stepped in and had a strong match, as did seniors Maggie Smith and Kelly Gould. Abby Tweet had five aces and Monica Litman four in that match. Sara Seib finished with 10 kills as well.
Against Monticello, Wadsworth came back with a vengeance, posting 17 kills, while Smith and Kelly Gould were again active.
Also considered: Union Grove Union High School girls volleyball.
Romo Watch
With the season on the verge of slipping away Sunday, Burlington High School graduate Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys eked out a 19-14 win over Carolina.
Romo threw his only touchdown of the game in the third quarter, a 26-yarder to Miles Austin. The rest of Dallas’s points came off the foot of field goal kicker Dan Bailey.
Romo finished the game 24 of 34 passing with 227 yards, no interceptions and the one touchdown.
Games of the Week
The only area team left in the playoffs, Catholic Central will host Randolph Saturday at 2 p.m. in a WIAA Division 7 Level 2 playoff game at the Topper Bowl.
