Life has not been kind to the Southern Lakes Blue Devils so far this season.
A handful of missed opportunities led to the fourth straight loss for the Blue Devils, this time 14-12 to the Wauwatosa Spartans at Westosha Central High School Saturday.
The Blue Devils are now 0-4 in the Ironman Football League.
The team had a chance to win late in the game Saturday, and coach Tom Hawkins thought the team had, actually, gotten in the end zone on fourth down to go ahead.
“We assumed he scored on the play,” Hawkins said of his player. “They said he was down.”
The Spartans got the ball back on the one-inch line, and the Blue Devils managed to stop them, but couldn’t get the score it needed to win the game.
“On paper, we definitely won the game,” said Hawkins. “We didn’t tally up the points to win the game, though.”
The Blue Devils racked up 447 yards on 17 passes and 35 runs. However, they turned the ball over twice, including on fumble on the Spartans’ 17-yard line.
“We had drove the length of the field,” Hawkins said. “We had a bad handoff from (quarterback) Gary Griffin to Chris Ford.”
Still, he is optimistic about the rest of the season.
“We’ve played two of the best teams in the league,” Hawkins said. “I think the second half of the season, we’re going to be the surprise team.”
The Blue Devils are off this weekend. They travel to Fond du Lac July 14 to play the Crusaders at 6 p.m.
