While the Burlington co-op swim team may have only finished fourth at the Fort Atkinson Invite Saturday, head coach Denita Jones liked who her team finished fourth against.
Arrowhead (512 points), Milton (377) and Fort Atkinson (297) all finished ahead of Burlington (254.5), but Arrowhead is a perennial Division 1 top-two state finisher, and Milton is the two-time defending Division 2 state champ.
“I thought we did quite well,” said Jones in light of the competition. “I thought we fared quite well.”
The squad was paced against by the three Wanasek sisters. Senior Serena Wanasek won the 500 free in 5:13.14, and was third in the 200 free in 1:57.19.
Junior Sara Wanasek was third in the 500 free (5:26.13) and sixth in the 200 free (2:02.58), while Olivia Wanasek finished eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.94).
Olivia Wanasek led a trio of swimmers in that event, all of whom had personal bests in making the top 10. Paytin Kennicott was ninth in 1:08.01, while Ellie Petrie was 10th in 1:08.23.
“She’s one of those swimmers, no matter where I stick her, she’ll do the best she can for me,” said Jones of Kennicott.
Kaley Brown had Burlington’s only other top-10 individual finish, swimming a PR in the 200 individual medley to finish ninth in 2:31.19.
Burlington also had a pair of top-five relay finishes. The 200 free relay of the three Wanasek sister and Hannah Meyer took fifth in 1:46.05, while the 400 free relay of the same swimmers took fourth in 3:49.39.
Jones indicated that Petrie, who swam a 59.82 split on the B relay of the 400 free, moved herself onto the A relay with that split.
“That was very exciting for her,” Jones said.
