With only one win in both the singles and doubles brackets, the Burlington High School girls’ tennis team fell to Union Grove Tuesday 5-2 in Southern Lakes Conference action.
The only wins for the Demons came at No. 4 singles from Sophie Grandi and No. 1 doubles from Lydia Crabtree and Sierra Koenen.
Head coach Rose Dolatowski noted that she moved her normal No. 1 doubles team players – Ali Zeman and Olivia Leuck – to No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but neither could get a win.
Grandi won 6-3, 6-4, while the Crabtree-Koenen pairing pulled out a three-set victory, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-1.
“She took a little bit to get going, but once she got going she did well,” Dolatowski said of Grandi.
The Crabtree-Koenen team is now 11-5 overall, with three of those wins coming at No. 1 doubles.
Dolatowski indicated the lineup she used in this match will probably be the lineup she uses for SLC duals.
Overall, Burlington is 5-8 in dual meets and 0-2 in the SLC.
The Demon girls placed fourth in the Racine County Tournament Saturday at Racine Case.
As a team, the girls tallied 21 points in an event in which a first-place finish earns eight points, second six, and so forth.
Burlington’s three doubles teams earned 15 of the team’s points, with the No. 3 doubles team of Kayla Ludwig and Rose Uhen finishing second.
Ludwig and Uhen won their first three matches and faced Case in the championship match. The pair lost the first set 6-3, came back to win the second 6-4, but lost the tiebreaker 10-6.
The No. 2 doubles team of Crabtree and Koenen took third, defeating Waterford’s Katie Queram and Taylor Webb 6-2, 7-5 in the third-place match.
Zeman and Leuck finished fourth at No. 1 doubles. They won their opening match over Bridget Brockmann and Alyssa Helwig of Waterford, but lost their next two matches to St. Catherine’s and Union Grove.
The Demons also earned four points for fourth place in No. 2 singles from Grandi.
