With her entire team back from last year, Waterford High School head girls’ golf coach Jody Hanson believes her team is capable of winning the Southern Lakes Conference this fall.
Returning from last year’s squad are seniors Emily Powers and Samantha Mamerow, junior Leilyn Nowaczynski and sophomore Breanna Bertschlinger.
Another Wolverine who shows promise is Madison Corey.
Powers finished in the top 10 at the SLC Tournament last year.
“We have at least two golfers (Powers and Mamerow) who qualified for sectionals last year and are capable of advancing further,” Hanson said. “We also have at least two more golfers capable of advancing further into the run at state.”
The Wolverine golfers finished third last year in the SLC, but this year hope to vie for the top spot. Hanson sees Westosha Central and Union Grove as the other two teams to beat.
A total of 19 girls came out for the team – seven seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen.
Hanson, in her fourth season as head coach, is assisted by second-year coach Jon Leonard.
Practices began August 6, and Hanson and Leonard have been stressing making good decisions pertaining to shot selection.
“We also are stressing no more than two putts,” Hanson said.
Hanson noted that girls are putting in a lot of individual time outside of practice.
“I believe my team can be very successful this year and am looking for great things from them,” Hanson added. “The fact they are never satisfied with how they did is very encouraging.”
The Wolverines began their season at the Elkhorn Invitational Aug. 9.
In the four-person scramble played at Evergreen Golf Club, Waterford carded a 74, which was tied for fifth with Wilmot, in the 12-team event.
Powers, Mamerow, Bertschlinger and Nowaczynski were the foursome who competed at the event.
A total of six SLC teams competed in this scramble, with Westosha (70) and Union Grove (72) finishing ahead of Waterford.
On Aug. 13, the girls competed in the 14-team Mukwonago Invitational payed at Edgewood Golf Course – The Pines.
Waterford carded a 414 to finish sixth overall. The Prairie School won the invite easily with a 336. That was 57 strokes ahead of second-place Mukwonago Blue, which had a 393.
Bertschlinger led the Wolverines with a 96 (47-49), with Powers close behind with a 98 (51-47). Corey had a 108 (48-60), and Mamerow a 112 (50-62).
Nowaczynski was the fifth Wolverine who competed. She carded a 116 (56-60).
