In an extremely close match between two Southern Lakes Conference rivals, Waterford edged Union Grove 4-3 Aug. 30 at home.
Just how close was this match? It was not decided until Waterford’s Sydney Ciano earned a three-set victory over Grove’s Lauren Tuma in the final match of the day.
Three of the brackets went three sets, with the Wolverines pulling out all three of those matches.
The Wolverine No. 1 doubles team of Alyssa Helwig and Bridget Brochmann won the opening set against Megan Tornoe and Dana Bauer 6-0, but lost the second set 6-4. They pulled themselves together, though, to win the third set 6-4.
Emily Rogahn and Taylor Webb lost the opening set 6-3, but came back to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-1 over Madison Mash and Katelyn Speigelhoff.
“When the (No.) 3 doubles team of Rogahn/Webb won, Ciano knew it was up to her,” head coach Linda Jones said. “Both teams (were) at the fence, cheering on their team member. Ciano took charge of that (third) set winning 6-1.”
Ciano had won the opening set 7-5, but lost the second set 6-1.
The fourth win for Waterford came at No. 4 singles where Hayley Ellie defeated Miranda Dam 6-1, 6-1.
Alyssa Schimelfenyg (No. 1 singles) lost to Jesse DeGroot 6-4, 6-0; Emily Brekke (No. 3 singles) lost to Jenna Oliver 61-75, and the NO. 2 doubles team of Katie Queram and Kate Weber lost to Union Grove’s Kendall Rueber and Alyssa Leffler 6-3, 6-4.
“I was proud of our Waterford girls, being able to pull themselves together and keep their focus against a very good team,” Jones said.
The win gives the Wolverine girls a 3-0 record in the SLC, and 6-2 overall.
Waterford hosted SLC foe Delavan-Darien on Thursday.
Next week, they will play at Westosha Central on Monday, Sept. 10, and at Lake Geneva Badger on Tuesday, Sept. 11. Both are SLC contests.
