With the only loss being a three-set match at No. 1 singles, the Waterford High School girls’ tennis team soundly defeated Wilmot in a Southern Lakes Conference matchup Tuesday at home.
Sydney Ciano, at No. 2 singles, won 6-2, 6-1; Emily Brekke (No. 3 singles) won 6-2, 6-3; and Hayley Ellie (at No. 4 singles) had no trouble in a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
In doubles action, Alyssa Helwig and Bridget Brockmann won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1; Katie Queram and Kate Weber scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2; and Emily Rogahn and Taylor Webb did not lose a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3.
Alyssa Schimelfenyg, at No. 1 singles, won the first set 7-5, but lost the next two sets by identical 6-1 scores.
The win gives the Wolverines a 5-2 record overall, and a 2-0 mark in the SLC.
The Wolverine girls placed third overall in the Racine County Tournament held at Racine Case Saturday.
As a team, the girls tallied 25 points in an event in which a first-place finish earns eight points, second six, and so forth.
The Prairie School and Racine St. Catherine’s tied for first with 45 points each.
Waterford scored at least three points in every bracket except No. 1 singles.
“Waterford did not have any championship matches, but was consistent at placing on all flights except one,” head coach Linda Jones said.
The best finishes were turned in by Ciano at No. 2 singles and Rogahn and Weber at No. 3 doubles. Both took third.
Ciano won her opening match 6-0, 6-3, lost the semifinal match 6-1, 6-0, but came back to defeated Sophie Grandi of Burlington 7-5, 6-2 in the third-place match.
Rogahn and Weber opened with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph, lost to Burlington’s Kayla Ludwig and Rose Uhen 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals. They pulled out a 7-6(3), 4-6, 13-11 win over The Prairie School for third place.
Brekke (No. 3 singles), Ellie (No. 4 singles), and the pairing of Queram and Webb (No. 2 doubles) all placed fourth. Each went 1-2 on the day.
Brockmann and Helwig lost their opening match to Burlington 6-2, 1-6, 10-8, but came back to win their next two matches 6-3, 6-1 and 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
“I thought we could have won a couple more matches then we did, but overall I am very happy with the girls’ performance,” Jones said. “It was a very hot long day, and they gave it everything they had.”
The Wolverine netters also took on Racine St. Catherine’s in a non-conference dual Aug. 22 and lost 6-1.
Waterford’s only winner was Ellie at No. 4 singles. She lost the first set 6-3, took the second set 6-2, and then won a close tiebreaker 11-9.
“She had a real battle, but kept her head in the game,” Jones said. “Her ability to come back after being down 1-6 in the tie break and win the match was outstanding. This win earned her a top seed in the Racine County Invite.”
