The Waterford High School wrestling team kicked off its season Nov. 29 at home against Wilmot and was handed a 41-35 defeat.
The Wolverine boys followed that up with a fifth-place finish in the eight-team Kettle Moraine Laser Duals on Saturday.
Overall, the Wolverines have begun the season 3-3.
In the Southern Lakes Conference dual, the match was not decided until the final duo had wrestled.
The two teams went into the 152-pound match tied at 35-35, but Michael Linderman of Wilmot secured the win for the Panthers when he pinned Waterford’s David Bansemer in one minute 31 seconds.
The teams split the 14 matches, but Wilmot benefited from three Waterford forfeits. In the actual matches wrestled, Waterford won seven of the 11 matches.
Getting pins for Waterford were Cody Nannemann at 160 pounds, Liam Pritchard at 182, Justin Ratkovec at 106 and Max Fisher at 145.
Nick Mastrocola (195) scored a 15-0 technical fall, while Dan Mcgilvary (120) and Kody Azarian (132) each won by decision.
Azarian’s match was the highlight of the dual as he took on Kody Zembal. Both wrestlers competed at state last year. Azarian came away with a 3-1 victory.
The Wolverine boys went 3-2 at the Laser Duals held at Kettle Moraine High School.
