It wasn’t the end of the season the Burlington High School baseball team envisioned.
Ahead by a run heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, BHS saw host Badger score two runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Demons then lost in the WIAA Division 1 regional final 3-2.
BHS ended its season with a 12-13 overall record.
“We played a good game,” said BHS coach Scott Staude. “We knew it would be a close game, as all of our games with them seem to be.
“But like most of the year, our bats struggled against a tough pitcher,” he added. “We had some opportunities, but could not deliver a knockout punch when we had a chance.”
BHS had a pair of runners on base in the seventh inning, but could not push the tying run across.
Both Burlington and badger scored a run in the first inning, but the game stayed tied at that mark until the fifth.
Badger pitcher Colton Andresen went all seven innings, but really only buckled in the fifth, when he walked in a run. However, BHS was unable to score any more runs, even though the bases were loaded.
The Badgers then scored twice in the bottom of the inning to secure the win, and waited out a weather delay to secure it.
Andresen struck out four and walked three, in comparison to BHS starter Nolan Friend, who struck out five and walked three in five and 1/3 innings. Mark Wallace finished the game.
Nick Bartlett was the only BHS batter with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Of BHS’s 13 losses this year, eight were by just one run.
“We lost eight one-run games this year, so we were close, but could not get over the hump,” said Staude.
