Although not originally on the sports schedule, six Burlington High School track and field athletes participated in the Wisconsin Track and Field Association’s State Indoor Championships held Saturday at UW-Whitewater.
Three members from each of the boys and girls squads participated. For the Demon girls, it was Meta Ehlen in the 800-meter run, Katie Sorensen in the 55-meter hurdles and Molly Benavides in the triple jump.
Zach Wawrzyniakowski (in the mile run), plus Max Shenkenberg and Ross Canales, both in the triple jump, represented the Demon boys.
Shenkenberg had the best finish of the six Demons, placing 16th in the triple jump with a leap of 41 feet, one inch. Canales finished 28th in the event (39-8).
On the girls side, Ehlen finished 31st in the 800 in 2:31.58, while Sorensen was 45th in the 55 hurdles prelims (9.96) and Benavides 28th in the triple jump (31-8 3/4).
Head girls coach Dan Luneau said they sent those six to give them a chance to compete in a big meet. This meet featured more than 50 teams.
For Catholic Central, the top finish came from the girls 4×200 relay of Ashley Reesman, Jacqui Fiorillo, Shelby Frederick and Megan Wadsworth, which took 13th in a field of more than 50 squads in 1:53.00.
Wadsworth made the semifinals of the 55-meter dash, taking 17th in prelims, but did not run in the semifinals.
Other top-50 finishers for the Hilltoppers at the meet were Tyler Burzawa, who took 14th in the boys 400 in 52.88, Hertel Novasic – 38th in the boys 800 in 2:05.64 – and the 4×400 relay team of Cassie and Ashley Reesman, Fiorillo and Kathleen Straube, 30th in 4:28.28.
