A 36-24 second-half deficit led to a 62-53 defeat at the hands of Union Grove Tuesday by the Burlington High School girls basketball team.
The Southern Lakes Conference loss drops the Demon girls to 3-10 in the SLC and 5-14 overall. Union Grove is now 6-6 in the SLC and 8-11 overall.
Burlington led 12-11 after one quarter on six points from Jenn Stevens.
Two threes by Lacey Scherrer and five more points from Stevens boosted the Demon lead to 29-16 at the half.
The second half, though, was all Broncos, as Union Grove outscored Burlington 17-10 in the third quarter and 19-14 in the fourth.
Stevens led both teams with 17 points, but only six of those came in the second half. Scherrer added 13.
Union Grove had four players in double figures.
Burlington got to the free-throw line only five times in this game, sinking four; while the Broncos shot 23 free throws, making 11.
Vs. Delavan-Darien
Playing a team back-to-back sometimes can be a real challenge. That is what the Demon girls faced Monday at Delavan-Darien.
One week earlier, Burlington had defeated the Comets 52-42 at home. Now the girls had to take on Delavan-Darien on the Comets home court. It proved to be no problem, though, for the Demons as Burlington routed the Comets 50-24.
The Demon defense held Delavan-Darien to single-digit scoring in all four quarters, while scoring in double digits themselves all four quarters. Burlington led 11-6 after one quarter, 28-12 at the half, and 39-20 after three quarters.
Anna Vogt led the Demons with 12 points, with Ashley Derks adding eight.
Vogt had three baskets (one from three-point range) and was five of six from the foul line (all in the fourth quarter).
A total of 10 Demon girls scored in this SLC game.
Burlington shot very well at the free-throw line, knocking down seven of eight attempts.
One half of the Comets points were scored at the foul line where they shot 12 of 22.
Burlington has just three games remaining in the regular season.
On Feb. 14, they hosted Milwaukee Marshall in a non-conference game.
On Monday, Feb. 18, the girls will host Wauwatosa West in a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt, and then on Thursday, Feb. 21, they will wrap up the regular by hosting Lake Geneva Badger in a 7 p.m. SLC matchup.
