On a night where the Southern Lakes Conference lead was potentially on the line, the Burlington High School boys basketball team was focused on one task – taking care of its part of the bargin at Union Grove.
“We’ve lost a couple of tough games there,” Berezowitz said of traveling to Union Grove, including a loss to the Broncos at UG last year. “Every year’s a little bit different. You’re just hoping that doesn’t enter into your minds.
“The big picture is, we knew that if we played well and we defended like we have been, we should be OK.”
The Demons survived a quiet second quarter where the two teams combined for just 12 points, and went on to a 52-37 victory over the Broncos.
“We were up 8-10 most of the game,” Berezowitz said. “We won by 15, but we had to grind it out. Against them, it’s kind of what you’ve got to do.”
With Waterford defeating Wilmot 53-51, the Demons found themselves back in a tie for the SLC lead.
“I think we knew pretty early,” Berezowitz said of the Waterford game. “We’ve got to take care of our own business. It doesn’t change it a whole lot.”
Against the Broncos, Carson Biedrzycki led the Demons again with 20 points. The senior added five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
No one else was in double figures for the Demons, but Ben Geiger pitched in eight points and Jake Reetz and Ty Dennis six each. Geiger and Reetz each had three assists, as did Jayden Essman, and Jimmy Penzel pitched in two assists.
On Tuesday at home, the Demons held visiting Elkhorn to just nine points in the second quarter and two in the third, and held on in the final quarter for a 49-44 victory.
It was another huge evening for Biedrzycki, who hit 12 of 23 shots and was perfect from the free-throw line to finish with 31 points. He added seven rebounds, an assist and two steals in the victory.
No one else was in double figures for the Demons, but Dennis added seven points and two steals, while Frank Hozeska had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Arik Anderson led Elkhorn with 13 points.
Burlington is now 10-1 in the SLC and 14-4 overall. The Demons hit the road Friday, traveling to Badger for a 7 p.m. contest.
