It’s been a rollercoaster couple of games for the Waterford Union High School boys basketball team.
After a contentious post-game in a 62-60 loss to Burlington Jan. 26, the Wolverines looked out of sorts in a loss to Catholic Central Jan. 29.
Then, with everything on the line for both teams, the Wolverines beat Wilmot Jan. 31, 53-51.
But on Tuesday, in the first game of a boys/girls doubleheader, Waterford scored just two points in the opening quarter at Union Grove and lost 55-30.
In the win over Wilmot, Waterford coach Mickey Mala said he was concerned coming off the loss to CCHS, especially because Chris Benavides had injured an ankle in practice that week.
“We once again showed our unbelievable character in a roller coaster of a game,” Mala said. “It was nip and tuck the whole way until a dramatic fourth quarter.”
The game went back and forth in the final quarter, with the Wolverines hitting a number of crucial shots. In the end, Benavides split a pair of free throws to give his team a two-point lead, and Wilmot missed at shot at the buzzer.
Tanner Hunsucker led the Wolverines with 25 points, while Benavides added 11 points (on only seven shots) and 11 rebounds.
On Tuesday night, though, Hunsucker’s basket in the first quarter accounted for the Wolverines only points in that stanza, and Waterford trailed 29-10 at the half.
Hunsucker led Waterford with 11 points, but no one else was in double figures for the Wolverines.
