It was not a pretty win, but the Bronco girls managed a 53-41 win over Burlington January 3 at home.

This SLC game was close until the fourth quarter when Union Grove finally made some shots to pull away.

Burlington led 8-7 after one quarter, but the Broncos took the lead in the second quarter and led 24-20 at the half. The lead was a slim three points – 36-33 – going into the final eight minutes.

Union Grove outscored the Demons 17-9 in the final quarter to get the 12-point victory. The biggest lead the Bronco girls had in this game was 14 points in the fourth.

“We didn’t make shots,” head coach Rob Domagalski said of his team’s offensive woes.

Overall, the Broncos made just 30 percent from the floor.

“It’s still a problem,” Domagalski said of the season-long shooting woes.

The girls got to the free-throw line 40 times in this game, but made just 19.

“That kept Burlington in the game,” Domagalski said.

Becca Maier led Union Grove with 12 points, as nine Broncos scored in this game.

Burlington had two players in double figures. They were led by Ellen Stang with 11, with Jenn Stevens adding 10.

With the loss, Burlington fell to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the SLC.

The Broncos are now 4-5 overall, and 2-2 in the SLC.

Union Grove traveled to Delavan-Darien Tuesday in SLC action. Results of that game were unavailable at news deadline.

The Broncos will host a very tough Wilmot team on Friday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m.

Wilmot is 6-0 in the SLC and is ranked No. 5 in the state in Division 2 in the latest wissports.net poll.

Union Grove lost 55-31 to the Panthers Nov. 30.

Next week, the girls will host Wisconsin Lutheran in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 7 p m. before traveling to Lake Geneva to take on Badger in an SLC contest on Friday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m.
