The Union Grove High School softball team kicked off its Southern Lakes Conference season in grand fashion Tuesday with a 6-1 win at Wilmot.

After spotting Wilmot a 1-0 lead in the second, Union Grove got its bats going in the fourth, scoring three times to take a 3-1 lead. The Bronco girls pushed two more runs across in the fifth and another in the seventh.

In the fourth, the Broncos used four hits and two walks to plate the three runs.

In the fifth, four more hits brought in two more runs.

Freshman Alyssa McClelland pitched the first five innings and got the win. She scattered seven hits and walked four, striking out one.

“McClelland stranded 10 runners in scoring position on a day where maybe she didn’t have her best stuff,” head coach Ryan Boylen said.

Allie Trudeau finished up the game, pitching two innings of scoreless ball.

“Allie came in and slammed the door for the save, striking out five of the six batters she faced,” Boylen said. “This against a very good hitting team in Wilmot.”

Offensively, the Bronco girls collected 10 hits. Trudeau was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Brooke Repta was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and an RBI. Claire Ryan also had two hits in four at-bats and scored twice. Sarah Petrovic scored twice, knocked in one run, on one hit and two bases on balls.

“This game had several positives,” Boylen said. “The obvious one would be that we got outside and got a game in. Others for Union Grove would have to be that though it took us some time to get rolling, Union Grove finally started swinging the bat the way I’ve known they could. Our freshmen pitchers came out and put in another really solid showing.”

Union Grove also played errorless ball.

With the win, the Bronco girls are 1-1 overall, and 1-0 in the SLC.

Union Grove played at Delavan-Darien in an SLC game on Wednesday, and hosted Lake Geneva Badger in another SLC matchup on Thursday.

On Monday, April 22, the girls will travel to Paddock Lake for a game against SLC rival Westosha Central at 4:30 p.m.

The Broncos will host Waterford in an SLC matchup on Wednesday, April 24, at 4:30 p.m., with Wilmot coming to town on Friday, April 26, at 4:30 p.m.
