It is now 10 wins in a row for the Union Grove High School girls softball team. After beginning the season 1-4, the Bronco girls have put together a 10-game winning streak, with the latest victories being the sweep of a doubleheader from Delavan-Darien on Monday. All 10 of those wins have come over a 10-day stretch.
With those wins, the Broncos are now 11-4 overall and 6-3 in the Southern Lakes Conference.
Against the Delavan-Darien Comets, Union Grove’s pitching dominated as they shut out the Comets in both games, winning 5-0 and 9-0.
In the first game, Union Grove grabbed a quick 4-0 lead in the first, batting around, and added its final run in the fifth.
In the meantime, freshman Allie Trudeau was shutting down the Delavan-Darien bats, limiting the Comets to one hit. Trudeau did not walk a batter and struck out 11.
“Trudeau was the story in this game as she struck out the first seven batters she faced,” head coach Ryan Boylen said.
The Broncos pounded out 13 hits, with Sarah Petrovic and Trudeau each going 2-for-3. Petrovic had a double, two RBIs and scored twice. Trudeau also had a double and two RBIs.
In game two, Union Grove once again scored early, tallying two runs in the first. Annie McClelland started the game with a double and Brooke Repta followed with a two-run homer.
Poynette Jamboree
The Bronco girls won two games at the Poynette Jamboree Saturday, defeating Columbus 19-0 in the first game and Oconomowoc 9-5 in game two.
In the Columbus win, Union Grove scored one in the first, but then put up 15 runs in the second, and three more in the third. The game ended after three innings due to time allotment.
In the second inning, the Broncos sent 20 batters to the plate.
In the win over Oconomowoc, Union Grove had to rally with four runs in the seventh just to send the game to extra innings.
In the eighth, the Broncos added five runs, and then limited Oconomowoc to a single run in the bottom of the inning.
“Defensively, the Broncos were two separate teams,” Boylen said. “To start the game, the Broncos played tight and it showed enroute to four errors which contributed in some way to all four Oconomowoc runs.
“Over the final two frames, however, the Broncos flipped the switch and played much cleaner and sharper ball.”
Alyssa McClelland started the game and gave up two earned runs on six hits. She struck out four.
Vs. Burlington
On May 2, the Broncos edged Burlington 7-5 in SLC action.
In extra innings, Union Grove scored twice in the ninth for the win.
