With a win in the 1,600 sprint medley, and second-place finish in the 800 sprint medley, the Union Grove High School girls track and field squad finished sixth at the Southern Lakes Conference Relays Monday at Elkhorn.

The Bronco girls tallied 31 points in the girls meet won by Waterford with 107 points.

Because of the nature of this meet, head coach Joe Busalacchi noted he simply cannot field athletes in all the events.

“We don’t have the numbers (for the girls’ squad),” he said.

In the 1,600 sprint medley Alex Goodrich, Domenique Brumby, Cassy Goodrich and Madelyn Schwartz teamed up to post a dominant winning time of four minutes 30.36 seconds. That was more than 21 seconds ahead of the second-place team.

Those same four Bronco girls were second in the 800 sprint medley, finishing just .03 seconds behind Waterford. The Bronco girls posted a time of 1:56.90.

“That was a tough event,” Busalacchi said. “They were side by side the whole way. It was a lean finish.”

The 800 sprint medley includes one 200, two 100s and a 400-meter race.

Although they were seventh out of eight teams, the Bronco boys actually scored more team points than their counterparts. The Bronco boys tallied 42 points on the boys side of the ledger. Badger won the boys events with 93 points.

The major reason for the Bronco boys outscoring the Bronco girls was that the boys’ squad had entries in 13 of the 14 events, while the girls were entered in only seven.

The best finishes by the boys came in the 4-by-100 meter relay and the 4-by-400 relay.

In the 4-by-100, Joe Peterson, Dennis Hebron, J.K. Witkofski and Andy Hatch took third in 46.28 seconds.

“They should be a little bit ahead of that,” Busalacchi said, but added that the weather at the event, and throughout this spring, did not help.

In the 4-by-400, Ryan Mevis, Luke Johnson, Jake Jossart and Kyle Martinez teamed up for a time of 3:46.34.

“It was a fun experience,” Busalacchi said of the SLC Relays. “It was a great experience for our kids.”

Overall, Busalacchi noted that a number of his athletes were able to compete in events they normally may not compete in.

“We had some kids that had to run out of their comfort zone,” Busalacchi said. “They all did really, really well.”

Next up for both squads is the Randy Lyon Invitational today at Whitewater.

Next week, the Broncos will compete in the Pewaukee Invitational on Friday, April 26.
