Facing the No. 1-ranked Westosha Central Falcons May 16, the Union Grove High School girls softball team saw its 17-game winning streak come to an end in a 9-5 loss at home.
One day earlier, the Broncos had extended the streak to 17 games with a 6-0 win over Indian Trail High School of Kenosha.
On Friday, Union Grove finished its regular season by completing a suspended game from May 2. The Bronco girls defeated Burlington 4-2 to end the regular season with a 19-5 record overall, and a 12-4 mark in the Southern Lakes Conference.
In the loss to Westosha, the Falcons took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Broncos responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to trail just 3-2 after one.
Westosha added two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to grab a 7-2 lead.
Union Grove cut that lead to 7-5 in the fourth with three of its own runs, but the Falcons added two more in the fifth for the final margin.
“It wasn’t the prettiest of games as both teams made their fair share of mistakes early, however, Westosha’s ability to get hits when they needed them and Union Grove’s inability to come up with the timely hits was the difference in this game,” head coach Ryan Boylen said. “The reality is that Westosha is a very good team and you can’t give them extra outs and extra baserunners and Union Grove did that.”
Both teams committed five errors in this sloppily played SLC contest. None of the Bronco runs were earned, with six of the nine Westosha runs were earned.
The Broncos outhit the Falcons 9-7, but the Falcons benefited from four walks and three hit batters.
Annie McClelland led Union Grove, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored.
Brooke Repta and Cassidy Kortendick each had two hits, with Repta scoring twice, and Kortendick having an RBI.
Allie Trudeau started on the mound for Union Grove and took the loss. She went 2-2/3 innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on four hits. She walked one and struck out three.
Emily DeCheck came into the game with two in the third and pitched two innings, giving up four runs (all earned) on two hits, three hit batters, and two walks. She struck out three.
Alyssa McClelland pitched the final 2-1/3 innings. She did not give up a run, gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Vs. Indian Trails
In the win at home against Indian Trails, Union Grove scored single runs in the first, send and sixth innings, and added three in the fifth.
The first inning run came as a result of two Indian Trail errors. The three in the fifth came about without a hit, but with the aid of five walks.
Alyssa McClelland got the win, going all seven innings. She gave up just two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five. She is now 7-1 on the year.
“The Broncos certainly got some help in the game, but Alyssa McClelland and her defense behind her didn’t need much as they played yet another very good game,” Boylen said.
Offensively, Kortendick had two hits (including a double) and an RBI. Zada Ballew had a double and scored twice.
Vs. Burlington
The win over Burlington came in a game that had been suspended May 2 in the top of the fifth inning with the Broncos leading 4-2 and a strike on Burlington’s leadoff hitter.
The two teams finished the game Friday, with no change in the score.
Trudeau completed the game she had started on the mound, getting the win. She gave up two runs on four hits, struck out 13 and walked just one.
