The Burlington High School girls tennis team is heading into the home stretch of the season with a good head of steam.
The Demon girls won seven duals last week and have won eight straight overall to improve to 15-5 overall. Three of those wins came against Southern Lakes Conference foes. Those victories give the Demons a 4-1 SLC mark with only two duals to go this season. That is already one more SLC win than the team had a year ago.
“The girls are playing well, and they’re playing well under pressure,” head coach Rose Dolatowski said. “It’s kind of exciting.”
Vs. Waterford
On Monday, the girls grabbed a key 5-2 victory at Waterford in SLC action.
The Demon girls got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, plus all three doubles courts.
Lacey Londre defeated Bridget Brockmann 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Sophie Grandi pulled out a three-set 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 win at No. 2. Londre is now 15-8 on the season, and Grandi 12-5.
In doubles action, Alli Zeman and Olivia Leuck won 6-4, 6-2 over Taylor Webb and Emily Brekke at No. 1. That victory avenged a loss by Zeman and Leuck to Webb and Brekke at the Racine County Invite earlier this season. The pair is now 15-6 overall.
At No.2 doubles, Sierra Koenen and Lydia Crabtree improved to 20-2 overall with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lauren Sikora and Katie Queram.
Laura Christoph and Paige Puntillo finished off the doubles sweep with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Maggie Cain and Kate Weber at No. 3.
Muskego Quad
On Saturday, Burlington won the Muskego Quad, winning all three matches by 7-1 scores. Dolatowski noted that with each team there were four singles and four doubles matches.
BHS defeated Kenosha Indian Trails in the opening match, following that up with a victory over Muskego, and took the final match versus South Milwaukee.
“That is the first time we’ve done that well there,” Dolatowski said.
Lacey, Coral Miller (at No. 3), were undefeated on the day in singles action. Courtney Wieners and Emily Crabtree split duties at No. 3 singles and also did not lose a match.
Dolatowski had different pairings in doubles action, but whoever played at No. 1, No. 2 did not lose a match.
Amy Gilanyi and Adriana Burd were always paired at No. 4, and they also were undefeated on the day.
The ability to play well under pressure proved beneficial to the Demons at this quad. The girls played nine tiebreakers, and won eight of them (five against Muskego).
Vs. Westosha Central
On Thursday, Burlington defeated SLC foe Westosha 6-1 at home.
Four of the matches went three sets, with the Demon girls capturing all four of those matches. Three of them came in singles action.
The only loss for the Demons came at No. 4 singles where Wieners dropped a tight 6-3, 7-5 match.
Vs. Badger
On Sept. 10, the netters played at Lake Geneva and came home with a 5-2 SLC victory.
Londre, Grandi and Miller all were victorious in singles action. Miller won a three-set match.
In doubles play, Crabtree and Koenen, and Christoph and Puntillo, were winners.
Schedule
Burlington defeated Elkhorn on Tuesday in SLC action, 7-0.
Next week, the girls will finish their SLC dual action at Wilmot on Monday, Sept. 23, at 4:15 p.m.
The SLC Meet will begin Thursday, Sept. 26. Singles action will take place at Waterford, and doubles action at Burlington. The conference meet will conclude Saturday, Sept. 28, with all finals being played at Waterford.
