Lake Geneva Badger got the jump on the Southern Lakes Conference swim championship when it won the SLC relays way back in August.
Now, the Burlington Demons have sent the message to the rest of the conference: we’re good, too.
In a pivotal SLC dual Tuesday night at the Aurora Wellness Center in Burlington, the Lady Demons edged the Elks, 100-70, behind dominant relays and several multiple winners.
Elkhorn won the 200 medley relay, finishing 2 seconds ahead of Burlington, but the Demons answered with two straight victories.
Sara Wanasek won the 200 freestyle followed by Kaley Brown’s 200 IM win.
After Elkhorn’s Anne Blackbourn fired back with a 50 freestyle win, Brown won her second event, the 100 butterfly.
Wanansek then crushed the competition in the 500 freestyle, beating the next-best swimmer by 25 seconds.
Next, the relays took over. The 200 freestyle relay (DeAnn Jones, Olivia Wanasek, Ellie Petrie and Sara Wanasek) nipped Elkhorn by a mere second. Finally, the Wanaseks, Petrie and Brown closed out the meet with a decisive victory in the 400 freestyle relay (3:49.86). The mark topped Elkhorn by 3 seconds.
Other top Burlington finishers included the 200 medley relay team of Paytin Kennicott, Ashley VanBuren, Sam Dziak and Jones, which was second with a solid time of 2:02.08.
Jones (50 free), Petrie (100 free) and Olivia Wanasek (100 backstroke) all landed in second place.
Burlington is now 4-0 in SLC action. Also, the Demons won an invite and took third at another this season.
The co-op, which features swimmers from Waterford, Union Grove and Burlington high schools, should take care of Whitewater before the match for all the marbles, Oct. 22 at home against Lake Geneva Badger.
Badger is undefeated in the SLC and currently ranked 10th in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel poll.
The Demons continue their quest for the SLC title Oct. 15 at Whitewater.
