Coming off a week of four games in seven days, the Catholic Central High School girls basketball team returned home Tuesday night and dropped a close 41-36 to Metro Classic Conference Martin Luther.
“Overall, we played pretty well,” said CCHS coach Jeff Behrens. “Our defense was good all night and we moved the ball well. There were just too many turnovers at critical times and we missed too many easy shots.
“I really thought we were going to win this one.”
It was a tight contest throughout, with the Lady ’Toppers holding a short-lived seven-point lead in the first and leading 2-4 points almost the entire contest.
Martin Luther managed to rally from a two-point deficit at the half and took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter. An early basket by Ali Wiemer but CCHS back in front before Martin Luther’s Amanda Winter hit a 3-pointer.
Kelsey Robers sunk a pair of free throws for CCHS to even the score again, but Martin Luther ran off four straight points to go back ahead.
Wiemer scored again and another pair of free throws from Robers tied the score again. Tatiana Diaz then hit a baseline jumper for Martin Luther, and CCHS couldn’t get even again.
Robers scored a game-high 18 points for Catholic Central. Wiemer pulled down 11 rebounds to go with her eight points. Liz Hafemann led Martin Luther with 15.
The Hilltoppers got a huge outing for Wiemer and Robers last week, as the team downed St. Thomas More 59-49 in Milwaukee Jan. 10.
“We played our best basketball of the season in the first half,” said Behrens. “We got a great game from our seniors.”
Catholic Central roared out of the game and outscored Thomas More 29-13 in the first half. Wiemer finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds for the game, while Robers added 19 points and 11 assists.
Two days later, Behrens said the team came out really flat against Kenosha St. Joe’s, and that the fourth game in seven days may have worn the team down.
CCHS lost 62-45 after managing just six points in the third quarter.
Robers dropped in a team-high 15 points, while Sophie Foote added 14.
